Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate and describe the students' perspectives on the use of Quizizz in their online language learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This research was done using a descriptive qualitative research design conducted at a public university in Central Java. Furthermore, there were two participants in this research, male and female. In addition, the data were collected from the interview as the main source for this research. Additionally, thematic analysis was used by the researcher to analyze the data findings. This research revealed that students had a positive view of the use of Quizizz as learning media. It was found that Quizizz became one of the online learning media that helped students during online learning. Moreover, the findings showed Quizizz keeps students motivated, makes them pay attention during online learning, and also affects students' concentration during their online learning.

Abstract

This study explores the reflective practices of two pre-service English teachers (PSETs) during their school-based teaching practice and internship program at the time of Covid-19. The purpose of this research is to describe PSETs reflections during their online school-based teaching practicum. The data were collected by utilizing the research participants’ journal writing as part of their e-portfolio projects which they kept during the teaching practicum. The collected data were analyzed thematically referring to Bain, Ballantyne, Packer & Mills, (1999). The research revealed four main thematic findings namely, Focus on Teaching, Focus on Self, Focus on Professional Issues, and Focus on Students or Class. Furthermore, the study also identified frequent sub-themes, such as General Teaching Issues (GTI), Specific Lessons or Incidents (SI), Own Teaching Approach (OTA), Relationship/Discussion with Supervising Teaching (RST), Teaching as Profession (TP), Professional Preparation (PP), Student /Class Behavior (SBC), Student /Class Characteristics (SCC). Overall, this research suggests that the use of online journaling helps to facilitate the reflective practices of prospective future English language teachers introspecting on a multitude of aspects of their teaching practicum/ internship program.

Abstract

This research aims to describe two English teachers’ perceptions regarding their experience in using role play to facilitate the students’ speaking practice at different English courses in Yogyakarta. The research participants are two teachers teaching speaking skills and have used role-play as one of the tasks in their classes. The researchers employed a descriptive qualitative design and thematic analysis to collect and examine the data obtained from interviews. The findings show that the use of role-play was: driven by the classes’ learning objectives, necessarily taking real life-like situation set up, having generally a significant impact on the students’ speaking fluency whilst boosting their confidence and on occasion, gaining various responses from the students.

Abstract

In recent time, several studies have discussed the challenges frequently faced by pre-service EFL teachers (PSEFLTs) while conducting their teaching practice in rural areas. However, studies about the challenges faced by PSEFLTs in Indonesian primary education context, especially under the Kampus Mengajar program is still lacking. The main objective of this study is to describe the challenges experienced by PSEFLTs during their teaching practicum at the primary-levels under the Kampus Mengajar program which took place in schools with limited facilities in remote areas. This study used qualitative research design, and involved two PSEFLTs from a private Islamic University in Yogyakarta participating in the Kampus Mengajar program for one semester. To gather the data, this study employed interviews as its primary data collection technique, complemented by documents as the secondary means. The study finding identified four challenges relating to three major themes, namely: 1). Pre-service teachers’ pedagogical competencies and 2). The development of learning materials and media, and 3) an emergent finding which revealed the institutional-related challenges. In reference to the findings, this study subsequently suggests the importance of providing additional and more contextualized training for pre-service teachers prior to their teaching practicum to orient and prepare them in dealing with the dynamic of teaching and learning in remote schools with limited facilities to perform more effectively and contribute meaningfully to the program

Abstract

Numerous studies have explored the implementation of Total Physical Response (TPR); however, most have primarily focused on offline teaching contexts. This study aims to describe the implementation of TPR in both online and offline young learners' English lessons. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with classroom observations as the primary data source and interviews serving as supplementary data. The observation instrument was based on the 13 principles of TPR outlined by Larsen-Freeman and Anderson (2011). The participants were two female pre-service English teachers: one teaching offline and the other online. The findings indicate that both teachers were unable to fully optimize the application of TPR in their respective settings. The observation results revealed variability in the number and frequency of TPR principles applied by each teacher, with some principles being implemented consistently, others infrequently, and some not at all. The interview data confirmed that the implementation of TPR was shaped by various factors perceived as either advantages or challenges in each context. The study suggests that teachers’ knowledge and experience with TPR are critical factors influencing the effective implementation of TPR in both online and face-to-face classrooms.

Abstract

This paper is meant to analyze Willis' work which underlines the influence of commodity culture of mainstream white society in America towards other race, particularly Afro-American as one of the country's minority races in the 1980's. The work further posits that the white America's popular and mass culture has ingrained and legitimately shaped the way Afro-American see and value their own culture and self identity, and that its spread and control is both political and materialistic. This paper is seek to put forward that Willis' idea can be visibly viewed through and associated with Gramsci's theory of hegemony in understanding the underlying agenda advocated by the more superior group (white) towards their subordinate counterparts (Afro-American).Key words: white mass culture, afro-American, hegemony

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the backpackers' utopianism in Alex Garland’s The Beach and the problem presented in this study is how is the backpackers’ utopianism presented in the novel. The study intends to identify utopianism that exist in the backpackers' community. The writers hopes that this study can give contribution to those interested in further analyzing the novel. In this case, the library research is used and the objective theory is employed as the basic principal of the analysis.Having a desire to find and experience something unusual and different through travel is what drives many young western backpackers to Thailand with adventure on their mind. Unfortunately what they find is no more than just a dirty reality of many overrun tourist resorts instead of a tourist free tropical paradise they long. Existing among those popularized tourist resorts is apparently, the beach, known for its beauty and natural purity. The beach happens to be an improbable tale among backpackers and travelers. However, for some other backpackers, this beach does exist. Guided by quite a top secret map, three backpackers find their pristine beach  on an unspoiled island of Thailand. Once there,  they are convinced that they have discovered Eden, or at least their very own version of it. Wearied by many overrun tourist spots, and impressed by the beauty of foe beach, those backpackers decide to live on the beach area eternally and secretly. In, this secret community, those backpackers adapt to foe needs and pleasures of alternatives. Unfortunately those backpackers supposedly ideal beach life is unable to be perfectly realize due to the imperfection that they find there, or more to the point, the imperfections they find within themselves.After, studying the backpackers utopianism, the writer can conclude that the backpackers’ notion of perfection upon an ideal place is in fact normal for it suggest the nature of humans as an imaginative creatures endowed with desire for perfection, especially reaction to their imperfect world. Aside from that, humans are, at the same time, likely to be considered absurd for being utopians those appear to be too exigent in demanding their particular version of ideal and thus, being less aware of the impracticability of his ideal. It is therefore to say that humans need to be sensible in idealizing their dreams. They must have complete knowledge and awareness of their own capability instead of blind faith.

Abstract

This article discusses a movie by Gurindher Chandha's Bride and Prejudice which is an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The movie, despite being a mainstream one, contains critiques about patriarchy in Indian society and is against Western's orientalist notion about India. For these reasons, this article is trying to unfold how feminism and orientalism are presented in the movie.

Abstract

The process of civil servant teacher's recruitment makes a school to possibly have both, or either, qualified and under qualified English teachers. The former can observe their job as teachers well while the later might not. The case is worse when they are not only incapable of teaching well but also still need help in their English proficiency. Asking them to take an English class is almost impossible. There must be ways of developing then professionalism while they are performing their tasks as teachers.Building a cooperative learning group for English teachers will improve their professionalism, both the qualified and under qualified ones, with its very slogan "sink and swim together". Each group will be responsible for the improvement of all members because their success is determined by the success of the group and the group also determines the success of the individual. Being in this group, qualified teachers can help their friends with their experiences while those who are not lucky in terms of both English and teaching skills will benefit from them without feeling underestimated due to the individual accountability characteristic of cooperative learning.In the group, teachers can do various professional development activities. They can build a discussion group, a reading group, peer observation and team teaching, and conduct a collaborative action research. This group will work better if the head master or a coordinator keeps an eye on it. This movement will also be much more effective if it is used as one of the criteria of kenaikan pangkat.

Abstract

This paper is a study investigating the different roles of English language teacher as they are particularly perceived by a novice English teacher. I am primarily interested in knowing and understanding how a novice teacher perceives her different roles as an English language teacher given her status as a beginning teacher who may still be relatively new in her teaching profession. Hence, being perceived as a new, and therefore, a less experienced one, her accounts and take on her different teaching roles are valuable to learn as they may reflect her pedagogical knowledge, limitations, expectations and the challenges she may face in assuming her different roles as an English language teacher which may as well be quite different from those of more senior or experience English language teachers.This study is a progressive qualitative. The data, in a form of texts, were presented and analyzed based on the narratives of the research participant. The use of narrative research inquiry was intended to seek insightful meanings and understandings of the individual's perceptions of her different roles as an English language teacher. The data were taken both from interviews and classroom observations.The findings of this study underline the participant's sound grasp and firm understanding of her various teaching roles and reveal a range of roles she had to perform involving thoughtful considerations of her teaching practices. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that a further or subsequent research conducted within a similar topic may also try to solely focus on one of the findings of the perceived teacher's roles in order to gain a deeper insight on it. A probable research may therefore investigate the degree of each role to see how it comes into being, what related factors may come into play and what constraints as well as challenges may come with each and or with all of the teaching role(s).Alternatively, a related study may also attempt for a comparative study investigating the similarities and differences of the various teaching roles perceived by both novice teachers and more experienced teachers. Finally, there may also be a need for an investigation on the students' perceptions towards English language teachers' various and effective roles in relation to their learning.
