Abstract

Abstract -- Some researchers have observed the mechanical characteristics of composite with strengthening by corn skin fibre reinforcement. However the combination of strength stress and water absorption of composite with corn skin fibres needs more exploration due to wide of its application particularly in the wet environment. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of fraction of the composite fibre to the tensile strength and moisture absorption. The main materials of this research are polyurethane as matrix and corn skin fibre as reinforcement. The research was done by mixing matrix and fibre at the certain volume fraction to produce the composite specimens. Specimens were tested by tensile test with ASTM D 3039 and water absorption test. The results shown that the higher fraction of the fibre, the increase the tensile strength. While for the water absorption, the absorption behaviour is affected by the expansion of polyurethane during producing the specimens.

Abstract

Fiber-reinforced composite core banana stems with additional filler of husk powder is another way to obtain the expected mechanical behavior of the composite. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of fiber volume fraction content to density, bending strength and tensile strength of sandwich composite.   Preparation of composite was done by hand lay-up method. Composite material used by banana ketip  fiber and addition of husk powder with variation of fiber volume fraction were 7, 10, and 13 % where husk was constant at 5% with random fiber direction. Tests were conducted by referring to the density est standard (ASTM C 271), bending est (ASTM C 393) and tensile test (ASTM D3039).  The result showed that the greater volume fraction of banana fiber, the lower the density value and the lower the bending strength. Whereas the tensile strength tended to increase as the volume fraction was higher.

Abstract

The use of composites from hybrid materials requires further research in particular with respect to their mechanical properties. The purpose of this research was to know the effect of volume fraction of fiberglass and coconut husk to the bending strength of composite sandwich hybrid. The main ingredients of this research were sengon sawdust as a composite core, fiberglass and coconut husk, with unsaturated polyester resin as matrix. Specimens were prepared with varying volume fractions of 10%, 20% and 30% for skins of fiberglass and coconut fiber and then were tested with bending tests. The results showed that the greater the volume fraction, the greater the bending strength beside that it also reduced the failure of the composites.
