Abstract

This research aims to reveal the motivation of Poland to collaborate with the United States in the field of military defense in the 2015-2019 period. During 2015-2019 there were tensions between Poland and Russia due to aggressive Russian military activities. These activities included annexation of Crimea in 2014, the placement of Iskander-M missiles that could reach all of Poland, and the modernization of a combat base in Kaliningrad. This research uses the perspective of neorealism which states that the international system is anarchic so that there is no supreme authority above the state and no guarantor of the survival of a country except the country itself. Weak countries must increase their power and balance with strong countries. Research is also supported by the theory of international cooperation, the concept of security dilemma, and nation-state level of analysis. This research is a qualitative research and uses explanative method. The results of research indicate that the influence of the Russian military in the procurement of cooperation between Poland and the United States. Russia's military activities are seen by Poland as a threat to itself. Poland decided to conduct military defense cooperation with the United States to increase Poland's military capacity and to overcome the Russian threat. Cooperations consist of the purchase of military equipment, the construction of military infrastructure, and announced Joint Statement—Joint Declaration on Defense Cooperation Regarding United States Force Posture in the Republic of Poland, signed  on June 12, 2019. Keywords: Poland, Defense Cooperation, Russia, Threat, United States.
