Abstract

Abstract:In recent years, plenty of scholarly works have denoted the raise of Islamic hijrah movements in Indonesia. These hijrah movements emerge massively using the advance of social media that facilitate the amplification of their da’wa content through popular culture trends. Few scholars have seen this phenomenon as tangled with the global context that happens in many countries e.g., religious commodification, conservative turn, and neo-radicalism. The sole focus on macro issues as the context behind the emergence of the hijrah movement implies the lack of attention to the human security threat that might be found in their activism. By using a gender analysis approach, I analyzed dozens of da’wa content by a hijrah movement named Indonesia without Dating, which is fraught with violent practices against women. The data in this study is obtained from April 2018 to May 2020 through field research, interview, and content analysis. This article also provides recommendations to the religious authorities including female clerics in responding to the threat against women using the hijrah campaign.
