Abstract

This article discusses the discourse of Sufism in the 18th century in Java as narrated by Serat Cabolek by Kiai Yasadipura I (1729-1803). This manuscript tells about the trial of Kiai Ahmad Mutamakin in front of the authorities of the Mataram Kingdom in Kartasura. This cleric from the village of Cabolek, Tuban, in the northern coast of Java was controversial and accused of spreading Ilmu Hak, namely wujudiyah Sufism, to commoners, even though his knowledge capacity was considered inadequate by the religious scholars (ulama) who opposed him. In that trial Kiai Mutamakin was found guilty, but later was granted pardon by King Pakubuwana II (1726-1749). The author of Serat Cabolek not only recorded the chronological details of Kiai Mutamakin's trial, more than that he also emphasized his stance on how the Javanese should direct their religious orientation. Yasadipura I, as a court poet with educational background of pesantren (Islamic boarding school), figured Ketib Anom as an ideal Javanese Muslim. This religious head officer from Kudus is a figure that perfectly described not just having in-depth knowledge of traditional Javanese mysticism, namely the mystical story of Dewaruci, but also mastering and carrying out the provisions of the Shari'a in Islam.

Abstract

Sunan Kalijaga is one of the Wali (The Saint) who is very popular in Java. His name is increasingly popular because he was mentioned many times in a myriad of chronicles (babad) composed in the Islamic Mataram period, particularly since 17th century. Text written on the chronicles are hagiographic so that enormous things in the current Java, especially in the field of politic, culture, and religious is always cited as the creation of this Wali. The appearance and the story modification of puppet story, Lir-ilir song, bedug usage as salat signal, the legend of tatal (woodchips) in the establishment of the Demak Great Mosque, the sacrad cloth of Antakusuma, and etcetera, is deemed as the Sunan Kalijaga’s legacy. Therefore, he is being regarded as the representation of perfect human in view of the Javanese, not even less perfect than the kings who had ever ruled in Mataram Kingdom.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i1.5222

Abstract

Abstract

Symptoms of conservatism, exclusivism, and extremism in religious expression in Indonesia seem to have strengthened since the Reformation era. These symptoms come to the surface through the acts of intolerance towards different people and groups, both within the religion itself and with other religions. In fact, not infrequently these acts are in the form of extreme violence which is included in the category of terrorism. The state has actually tried to overcome the impact of these worrying phenomena, but the results are still not optimal. This article tries to contribute the ideas to overcome this situation through education, especially religious education. In religious education, which is a compulsory subject in schools from basic to highest education, it is necessary to provide introduction to other religions, especially religions in Indonesia. This material introduction can be given to students in class XI or XII, assuming that they are mature enough to accept differences. In addition, in this internet era, religious education needs to be delivered in creative and innovative ways so that this subject is attractive to students.

Abstract

The study of religion has evolved significantly over time, generally divided into two main approaches: normative and empirical. Theology and philosophy of religion belong to the normative category, while sociology of religion, psychology of religion, and history of religion fall under the empirical category. However, both approaches face criticism: the normative approach is often seen as overly dogmatic, while the empirical approach tends to reduce religion to a purely anthropological phenomenon. In response to these limitations, a new orientation in religious studies has emerged—one that seeks a more sympathetic understanding of different faiths. While phenomenology offers an approach to grasping religious experiences, it does not necessarily uncover the deeper unity underlying religious diversity. This is where perennial philosophy comes into play. One of the foremost scholars devoted to the perennialist approach in modern times is Frithjof Schuon. His works cover a wide range of religious traditions, from Christianity to Native American spirituality, from Islam to Japanese Shintoism. Unlike many Western scholars who focus primarily on the exoteric, empirical aspects of religion, Schuon begins with the esoteric essence of religious doctrines and symbols before examining their exoteric expressions. This method is evident in his three major works on Islam: Understanding Islam, Dimensions of Islam, and Islam and the Perennial Philosophy.
