Abstract

The success of Muslims in spreading their teachings in the archipelago is very clearly seen by the evidence of the domination of Muslims in the archipelago today. This success is inseparable from the services of traders, preachers, kyai and teachers of the Koran. Including walisongo who has succeeded in introducing Islamic teachings to remote areas of Java. They use many approaches so that Islam can be well accepted by the surrounding community without war. One of them is by inserting Islamic values and teachings into the traditions and culture of Javanese society. Like Sunan Kudus, which is very tolerant of the culture that has been formed and rooted in the Kudus community. He adopted a lot of Hindu-Buddhist art and culture that has long been attached to the life of the Javanese people. Building the al-Aqsa Mosque that combines ancient Javanese mosque architecture with Indian Mughal architecture, the Kudus Tower is very similar to the Hindu Majapahit temple, places Buddhist teachings that do not conflict with Islamic teachings on the architecture of ablution and prohibits the slaughter of cows which are considered sacred by Hindus. All of this was done by Sunan Kudus to create Cultural Islam, Islam that interacts with culture so that it can be well received by the community without having to eliminate existing traditions and culture.

Abstract

This study examines hadiths concerning religious moderation through a maqāṣid al-sharī'ah framework in the context of contemporary interreligious relations. Despite extensive hadith scholarship, few studies systematically apply the maqāṣid framework to moderation discourse, especially in addressing religious extremism rooted in literalist interpretations that overlook Islamic law's normative objectives. Employing a thematic (mawḍū'ī) method, this study analyses hadiths from Ṣaḥīḥayn and al-Sunan al-Arba'ah concerning tolerance, the prohibition of ghuluw (excessiveness), and the Prophet Muhammad's interfaith practices. Al-Shāṭibī's maqāṣid framework serves as the interpretive lens, focusing on the protection of religion (ḥifẓ al-dīn), life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), and human dignity. The findings show three guiding principles: rejecting religious extremism (ghuluw), putting ease (taysīr) over difficulty, and accepting religious pluralism as a normal part of life. This study is the initial effort to implement al-Shāṭibī's classical framework for contemporary interfaith ethics, which illustrates that religious moderation in hadith transcends doctrinal mandates to provide contextual ethical-operational guidance. The research offers a maqāṣid-based hermeneutical paradigm that bridges scriptural authenticity with plural social realities, equipping Islamic scholars, policymakers, and interfaith practitioners with methodological tools to counter extremism and develop inclusive public theology in religiously diverse societies.

Abstract

This paper examines the epistemology of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) religious knowledge in 19th-century Java and positions it as a historical source in the study of Indonesian Islamic history. Historiography has traditionally positioned Islamic boarding schools as socio-religious objects, while their scholarly traditions have rarely been read as producers of historical knowledge. Through an intellectual history and philosophy of science approach, this study attempts to dissect the epistemic tradition of Islamic boarding schools, encompassing the sanad-based system of knowledge transmission, the scholarly authority of kyai (Islamic scholars), the use of kitab kuning, and learning practices such as talaqqi (religious teachings) and bandongan (religious recitation). The results demonstrate that Islamic boarding school religious knowledge has a well-established epistemological foundation, internal validation mechanisms, and historical continuity that can be scientifically justified. In the Javanese context, specifically in the 19th century, this epistemic tradition not only functioned as a medium for transmitting religious teachings but also recorded the traces of intellectuals, networks of ulama (Islamic scholars), and scholarly responses to the dynamics of colonialism. Therefore, the epistemology of Islamic boarding school religious knowledge can be positioned as a legitimate historical source. This paper expands the conception of history and offers a critique of the limitations of the positivistic historiographic approach in writing the history of Islam in Indonesia.
