Abstract

This research aims to analyze and critically examine the idea of Zakaria Ouzon in his book Jinayah al-Bukhari. This study becomes relevant in the study of contemporary hadith. Although shaheeh Bukhari is considered as asahhu al-kutub ba’da alqur’an, but in reality there are some redactions needed to be clarified of the truth that can result proportionate and consistent understanding aligned with the message of Prophet Muhammad SAW as the best figure. From this research, it is found that Ouzon criticized the book of shaheeh bukhori related to the following matters: the history of Al-Bukhari related to al-Qur'an al-Karim, the figure of Prophet Muhammad SAW, the religions besides Islam, the law and conditions of Prophet’s companions, the women, the figure of Bukhari, and the hadiths which contradict each other. The approach implemented by Ouzon in his book includes three fully integrated components, namely a historical approach, logic, and comparison. However Ouzon’s arguments are sometimes polemically and tend to impose his arguments, as Ouzon’s assumption to hadiths that contradict science.

Abstract

According to Amin al-Khuli, one of the figures who gives an effect to the thought of Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid on his study about al-Qur’an, at the first time, a thought of the Islamic modernity is considered as an infidelity by some people. As time goes by, they pursue it and the thought of it becomes Madzhab for them. Perhaps, that is a right term for Nasr Hamid, the Egyptian intellectual whose thought is regarded an infidelity in the beginning, but it becomes a popular object for the field of study and the research in the world academics, as happened in Indonesia. It is caused by the Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid’s concepts about Islamic modernity which can be considered as a new term in study discourse of al-Qur’an. Linguistics-Semantics and literature are the approaches offered by him in the study of al-Qur’an, because these approaches are capable to find the objective meaning of al-Qur’an, so the approaches, thought and interpretation of religious texts can be more dynamic, contextual, inclusive and relevant to the contemporary discourse of society. Based on the explanation, this study analyzes the views of Nasr Hamid about al-Qur’an and the ways of interpretation which is developed by him. It is hoped that we can see more objectively about who he is, so we don’t fall into a blind claims and maintaining a stagnation.

Abstract

The Indonesian public has known this famous Indonesian mufassir quite well. Not only in lectures and seminars, but also widely known by the general public. So that at a glance it will be easier to explain who the figure of M. Quraish Shihab is in front of general readers. Nevertheless, apparently there are still things that are academic in nature, which are not widely known by the public. In the context of methodology, for example, Tafsir al-Misbah has special characteristics that color its interpretation and describe the intellectual expression of the interpreter in understanding the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an. Tafsir al-Misbah successfully combines the presentation of the surahs of the Qur'an with al-adabi al-ijtima'i style with correlative tahlili method. That is, Tafsir al-Misbah although patterned adabi al-ijtima'i (social-cultural style) does not leave the unity of the message in each surah of the Qur'an. The style of thought and its distinctive tendencies have colored enough in the discourse of the study of the Qur'an in Indonesia. Through his magnum oppus, Quraish Shihab has become one of the important references in studying the dynamics of al-Qur'an studies in Indonesia. The characteristics of Tafsir al-Misbah that emphasize the balance aspect of the approach, namely combining the linguistic approach with the contextual paradigm, succeeded in presenting the meanings of the Qur'an that are functional, down-to-earth, straightforward and easily understood by all elements of Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study examines how Javanese Muslims integrate Qur’anic reception into the ritual care and preservation of the Kris. While the Kris has shifted from being a weapon to a symbolic object of art and cultural heritage, its preservation remains deeply intertwined with religious meaning. Within Javanese Muslim communities, Qur’anic recitation accompanies rituals surrounding the Kris, transforming it into a medium for embodying Islamic values. Using qualitative methods, this research examines how such practices localize scripture through material culture. The findings identify three typologies of Qur’anic reception: (1) Exegetical reception, encompassing ḥabl min Allāh (relation with God), ḥabl min al-nās (ethical relations with others), and ḥabl min al-‘ālam (ecological consciousness); (2) Aesthetic reception, manifested in the Kris’s tayuhan (decorative form), symbolizing humility and moral refinement; and (3) Functional reception, where the Kris serves as a medium for balance and harmony in life. By examining the Qur’an within the context of cultural practice, this study enriches the discourse on Qur’anic reception and hermeneutics. It contributes to scholarship on Islam in Southeast Asia by demonstrating how cultural artifacts, such as the Kris, preserve and embody religious meaning beyond textual exegesis. The Qur’anic receptions embodied in the preservation of the Kris reflect discursive meanings and performative engagements with the Qur’an that transcend its textual interpretation.
