Abstract

Pangandaran Beach Tourism Area is one of leading tourism areas in West Java. During certain period of time, hazard has often cause accidents toward visitors in the area. Therefore, there is a need to identify physical and biological hazards which threaten visitors’ safety in order to develop visitor safety management. Research was carried out in June – July 2011, and an update was conducted in January – February 2017, which covered three locations, i.e. Pantai Barat, Pantai Timur, and Pantai Pasir Putih. Field observation, interview with visitors, community and lifeguard, and literature review were employed in data collection. A hundred respondents for each visitor and community was selected using convenient sampling method. The result found rip current, plunging wave, tsunami, earthquake, wave, and tide as physical hazard, while jellyfish, sea snake, sea urchin, lionfish, and stone fish as biological hazard found in the sea, and long-tailed macaque as terrestrial biological hazard. Rip current possessed substantial risk that had to be avoided through the establishment of swimming prohibition area. Visitor’s safety management technique option for rip current hazard involved a socialization toward visitors about self-rescue technique in case they are swept by rip current.

Abstract

Estuarine crocodile often considered as dangerous animal due to continual news of human crocodile conflict cases around the world.  This study aimed to analyze the perception of visitors about estuarine crocodile in captivity and facilities in two captive breeding sites. We conducted field observation and structured interview to 120 respondents in two local zoos: the Indonesia Jaya Crocodile Park (TBIJ or crocodile park)  in Bekasi and Ragunan Zoo (TMR or the zoo) in Jakarta. All visitors have low knowledge about estuarine crocodile, which they obtained mostly from mass media. Although most visitors know that estuarine crocodies are protected however in pratice their don’t have enough empathy to captive crocodiles. Visitors to both areas are local who lives near the vicinity of the park or zoo. Crocodile park visitors mostly came from Bekasi with an average number of visits 1 time and 1-hour length of visit. The reason for their visit were the closeness of the location and to learn crocodiles. The zoo visitors mostly came from Jakarta with an average number of visits more than 3 times and 6 hours length of visits. Respondents visited the zoo because of low cost and recreation. Visitors of the zoo provided  positive review for several aspects in the zoo, while visitors in crocodile park gave positive review only on physical condition of crocodiles.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious health problem in Indonesia that can occur due to chronic malnutrition, infections, low parental education, low household socio-economic levels, and other factors. Cikahuripan Village, Cisolok District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, is one of the stunting loci, with 24 toddlers recorded as experiencing stunting. One of the challenges in preventing stunting in rural areas is the limited access to health information. Nutrition education interventions are needed to increase knowledge about stunting. The Gemilang program aims to increase public understanding of stunting prevention through weaning food and to distribute Supplementary Food for stunted children and pregnant women with Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED). This program is implemented through education, weaning food cooking demonstrations and supplementary food making. The evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test and analyzed with a paired t-test statistical test and N-Gain calculation. The results showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in participants' knowledge, with an average pre-test score of 48.82%, an average post-test score of 85.29%, and an N-gain value of 0.69. The result is is interpreted as a moderate increase in knowledge, showing that the activity was quite effective in increasing participant knowledge. Improvement efforts related to the provision of materials and participant participation are still needed to strengthen the health education program. Further research and evaluation can be conducted to assess sustainable programs' impact on stunting reduction rates in Cikahuripan Village.

Abstract

Patengan and Alam Endah villages located in the Rancabali District South Bandung. Both villages have identical characteristics to the region that most of the people engaged in agricultural with variations in the tourism sector. The identical characteristic make social capital comparation can be done. Differences in the two villages is contained in land tenure wich unlike Alam Endah Village that have private land tenure, Patengan Village are in state land tenure. The field research was conducted in June 2016. The depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured questioner developed by Social Capital Assessment Tool (SCAT). Research is done by carefully observing the phenomenon using participant observation approach. Research showed that land tenure have effect on social capital (especially on trust, norm, caring and proactive action element) which happened because public concern over restrictions on access to natural resources increase the value of social capital because people tend to give positive responses to avoid conflict. In contrary, a figure that have influence toward natural resources access followed by other society member makes social capital inevitable increase. Key word: Alam Endah Village, land tenure, Patengan Village, social capital

Abstract

Twenty-nine species of snakes, eight highly venomous, inhabit various habitats found in the IPB Darmaga Campus, posing risks to people who have activities on campus. A snake bite case occurred on the IPB Darmaga campus in 2021, causing death. Such a case can incite negative perceptions in people and adversely affect their conservation intention. This study aimed to analyse students' knowledge and attitudes about snakes on the IPB Darmaga campus and draw on their conservation intentions from the data. A Google form was used to collect the data from 374 respondents from nine faculties at IPB University. A comparison was made between the students actively joining the Herpetofauna Observation Group (KPH) and the general students (non-KPH). Knowledge of the presence of snakes on campus was strongly influenced by information availability and student activities. All KPH students had direct encounters with snakes on campus, while only 52.9% of non-KPH students had such encounters. A total of 7.2% of non-KPH students and 58.6% of KPH students correctly identified the types of venomous and non-venomous snakes. Some non-KPH students were afraid of and disgusted by the sight of snakes. In contrast to KPH students, most non-KPH students suggested they would kill snakes upon encounter, showing their lack of conservation intention. Such data suggests the need for snake education for students to improve their conservation intention of the species, while at the same time increasing their ability to protect themselves from the risk of conflicts.
