Abstract

Background: Degenerative diseases, aggressive periodontitis, trauma, jaw resection, and congenital abnormalities can cause defects in jaw bone. The surgical procedure for bone reconstruction currently performed is bone regeneration graft (BRG). Unfortunately, this procedure still has many disadvantages. Thus, tissue engineering approach is necessary to be conducted. The main component used in this tissue engineering is scaffolds. Scaffolds used in bone regeneration is expected to have appropriate characteristics with bone, such as high porosity and swelling ratio, low degradation rates, and good mechanical properties. For those reasons, this research used scaffolds made from bovine hydroxyapatite (BHA), gelatin (GEL), and chitosan (K)/BHA-GEL-K as one of biomaterial candidates for bone regeneration. Purpose: This study aimed to determine compressive strength value and porosity size of BHA-GEL-K scaffolds. Method: Compressive strength of BHA-GEL-K scaffolds was tested using autograph with speed 10 mm/ min with a load cell compress machine of 100 kN. Compressive strength was calculated by force divided to surface area. Porosity test was measured using SEM. Scaffold were coated with Pb and Au, then the porosity size is calculated with SEM at 100x magnification. Result: BHA-GEL-K scaffolds had a mean compressive strength value of 174.29 kPa and a porosity size of 31.62 + 147.06 lm. Conclusion: It can be concluded that BHA-GEL-K scaffolds has a good compressive strength, but not yet resemble real bone mass, while porosity of BHA-GEL-K scaffold is appropriate for bone tissue regeneration application.

Abstract

Tooth extraction is the most common dental treatment procedure in Indonesia. This is happened due to lack of knowledge and awareness of the effect of tooth extraction. Many patients requested dental extraction for some reason such as do not stand the pain anymore, dental treatment is expensive and long, althought the fact that such cases can still be treated. This condition called irrational extraction. Irrational extraction may cause loss of important componets for bone regeneration such as periodontal ligament stem cells/PDLSC, dental pulp stem cells/DPSC, extracellular matrix/ECM and local growth factor. PDLSC has potential differentiation into osteoblast, fibroblast periodontal ligament, and sementoblast. DPSC induces odontontoblast to form reparative dentin. Local growth factors are important component for hard and soft tissue regeneration. Due to loss of important component for bone regeneration, bone became small, thin, and brittle, which allows bone fracture. The purpose of this review is to explain the effect of irrational extraction on mesenchymal stem cell, periodontal ligament, ECM, and local growth factor. This knowledge is expected to reduce irrational tooth extraction.

Abstract

Background: The population aged 60 years and over will increase from year to year. Aging does not have to be followed by various diseases if assistance or treatment is done properly and correctly. Currently, dental and oral health has been established as an important risk factor that can cause disease in all body. Aims: The purpose of this article is analyzing the collaboration between dentists and nurses in the elderly community to prevent the emergence of increasingly widespread disease in the elderly. Methods: The search strategy for English and Indonesian studies relevant to the topic was carried out using the ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Garuda databases limited from 2015 to 2020. The keywords used were “collaboration”, “dentist”, “elderly”, “nurse”. Full text articles were reviewed to select studies that fit the criteria. Inclusion criteria include: many factors could be collaborated in an integrated manner between dentists and nurses for the elderly in order to the elderly could maintain their health. Results: The search results obtained 21 articles. The main principles of collaboration between dentists and nurses that must be fulfilled to maintain the health of the elderly, by a holistic approach accompanied by guidelines, work procedures and management in an integrated manner, such as psychological factors, being friendly, communicating well, suggesting dental care for the elderly according to the indications (advice on the correct way of brushing teeth twice a day and periodical control, cleaning plaque-food residue, wearing dentures, removing calculus) so as not to cause more serious disturbances, digestive disorders, as well as early recognition of abnormalities that may occur in the oral cavity. Conclusions: Collaboration of nurses and dentists in the elderly community can expect to increase the knowledge of the elderly about dental and oral health, which is important to maintain their all health forever.
