Abstract

Islamic state of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) movement in the Middle East has spread to Indonesia. One of the areas that have some ISIS followers is ex-residency of Surakarta. This region has been known as a home for Islamic radical groups and some radical religious organizations that flourish. Some of terrorism cases in Indonesia, mostly the terrorists are from Surakarta. This explorative study reveals the early development of ISIS in Surakarta and how to deal with this problem. The result shows that ISIS emerges publicly in July 2014 with some indications such as ISIS symbols in public places (graffiti on city walls and ISIS’ flag) and declaration to support ISIS. ISIS symbols spread to many areas that are affiliated with a famous Islamic radical group and some figures who support ISIS. Socio-political and religious situation in Surakarta contribute to potential radical religious groups that increase ISIS development. Strategic ways to overcome ISIS development are conducting counterdiscourse to ISIS movement, promoting Islam Rahmatan lil’alamin, and creating an Indonesian religious discourse.

Abstract

In general, a family consists of husband or father, wife or mother, and children who each have different roles and functions within the institution of family. Internal affairs of the household, especially educating children, managing household matters, and providing meals are a wife’s common tasks, while working as a breadwinner is a husband’s responsibility. However, the social facts show there are families which have female heads of household because of certain reasons. This study applies a qualitative approach to examine women as heads of household in Tembokrejo Village, Muncar Subdistrict, Banyuwangi, East Java, as an effort to build “sakinah” families. The findings suggest that female heads of household (Pekka) get a double burden in their families, such as carrying out the production function to generate income and support families’ economy, as well as the functions of education, affection, care, and protection. Pekka play their roles to build “sakinah” families by coping with the crisis as the impact of being left by their husbands for some certain reasons, solving economic problems, performing educational functions, and finally social interaction. The role of the government and the religious institutions are less able to protect and care about families headed by Pekka especially the poor ones. Protection and care for the families are realized by, among of them, providing guarantees to those families to obtain their basic rights, especially the economic ones.
