Abstract

Mosaic disease caused by Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and Chilli veinal mottle Virus (ChiVMV) has been distributed widely in chilli in Indonesia and considered as important disease. A research was conducted to investigate the spread and incidence of CMV and ChiVMV in Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu and to identify its insect vector. Symptomatic and asymptomatic leaf samples were collected systematically from several chillipepper fields for further detection by DAS-ELISA (Double antibody sandwich-enzyme linked immunosorbant assay) using specific antibody for CMV and ChiVMV. The result showed that infection of both CMV and ChiVMV was found with disease incidence reached 20-50%, whereas infection only by ChiVMV or CMV were 50-80% and 20-50%, respectively. One species of aphid, i.e. Aphis gossypii was found from the fields.Key words: Aphis gossypii, CMV, ChiVMV, disease incidence

Abstract

[THE ISOLATION OFSteinernema FROM CORN FIELD AND ITS PATHOGENECITY TO Spodoptera litura F]. Insect pathogenic nematode (IPN) offers an environmentally sound of controlling insect pest, as alternative for chemical insecticide. This research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of  Steinernema sp isolates collected from corn fields in Southern parts of  Bengkulu Province. The factorial experiment involved treatment combinations between sources of IPN isolate (Seluma, South Bengkulu, and Kaur) and density of IPN isolate  (100, 200, and 400 JI mL-1). The pathogenecity of the isolates were tested by inoculating the isolates on 4th instar of S. litura. The isolate of IPN collected from Seluma and Kaur corn fields were more effective in controlling the insect compared to those of the South Bengkulu as S. litura was killed faster and caused the 100 % mortality at 60 hours after inoculation. The symptoms of attacked larvae of S. litura were sluggish movement, body color changed to blackish with damaged internal organs. (JI=juvenile infective)

Abstract

[EFFICACY OF PAPAYA LEAF EXTRACT IN CONTROLLING COTTON APHID DURING VEGEATIVE GROWTH STAGE OF EGGPLANT].  Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii Glover) can cause serious economic losses in the eggplant production.  The application of synthetic pesticides can be effective in controlling the pest but it may not be the best solution for the human health and environment. Botanical pesticides have long been known for their potential as the alternative to synthetic pesticides for crop protection with reduced risk to human health and environmental hazard. Objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of papaya leaf extract solutions in controlling cotton aphid and their effect on the vegetative growth of eggplant. Papaya leaf extract solutions differing in concentration (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) were sprayed onto aphid infested eggplants to observe the insect mortality, crop damage, and the lethal concentration at LC50 and LC90. The mortality of aphid was significantly increased following the application of papaya leaf extract, with the highest mortality (91.33%) was found on the concentration of 50%. The lethal concentrations of the extract causing 50% (LC50) and 90% (LC90) aphid mortality were   9.98% and 41.99%, respectively. As compared to the control treatment, the crop damage was significantly reduced by the application of the papaya leaf extract solution.

Abstract

[THE EFFICACY OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF BETEL NUT AGAINST DIAMONDBACK MOTH OF PAKCOY CABBAGES]. The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) is the most destructive pest on cultivated pakcoy cabbages.  Chemical control using synthetic insecticides may cause pollution to the environment and may contribute to the development of resistance insects.  Therefore, botanical insecticides which are environmentally safe could be used as an alternative pesticide.  The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of aqueous extract of betel nut to control diamondback moth on pakchoi cabbages (Brassica rapa sub-sp. chinensis). The extracts of betel nut consisted of six concentrations included 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 %, and pure water as a control.  The extracts were sprayed on the pakchoy plants infested by diamondback moth.  The application of betel nut extracts have significantly increased insect’s mortality and decreased the attacked intensity on the cabbages by the insect. The highest mortality of insects was 72.5%, whereas the lowest attack intensity was 6.29% were observed at the concentration of 60% of betel nut extract application. No significant effect was observed on the plant growth and yield.

Abstract

ABSTRACT[THE EFFECT OF GOAT MANURES AND NPK 16:16:16 FERTILIZER ON THE GROWTH OF SEEDLESS GUAVA CROPS AND QUALITY OF ITS FRUIT (Psidium guajava L) AT RAINY SEASONS OF INDONESIA]. Guava var. Crystal, known as seedless guava, is one of the most popular guava in Indonesia. Compated to other guavas, seedless guava has softer texture, tastes sweeter, and has less seeds. This experiment was carried out from September 2017 to February 2018 at Harapan Makmur village, Pondok Kubang regency, and Central Bengkulu district. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of goat manures and NPK 16:16:16 fertilizers on the growth of guava crops and the quality of its fruits. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design (2 factors, 5 replications). The first factor tested was the dose of goat manures, consisting of 3 levels: 0, 9, and 18 kg/plant. The second factor tested was the dose of NPK 16:16:16 fertilizers, consisting of 3 levels: 0, 0,25, and 0.5 kg/plant. The results showed that goat manures significantly affected the diameter and number of branches. In addition, the dose of NPK significantly affected the diameter of branches, degree of leaf greenness, number of flower, and number of aborted flowers. Finally, the interaction between goat manures and NPK manures did not significantly affect all variables measured, except for leaf areas.

Abstract

Aphis gossypii Glover is an important sucking insect pest of the pepper (Capsicum annum L.), Can be controlled by using natural pesticides. The study aimed to evaluate the application time and concentration of Cerbera odollam G. seed extract in controlling A. gossypii and their effects on pepper, C. annum. Complete randomized design was used in this experiment, with two factors, and was repeated three times. The first factor was the time of application of the extract, consisting of before and after A. gossypii infestation. The second factor was the concentration of C. odollam extract (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%). The results indicated the C. odollam seed extract affected the mortality of A. gossypii. At a concentration of 1% of C. odollam seed extract, the mortality of A. gossypii was 68% while at a concentration of 3% the mortality reached up to 90%. C. odollam seed extract applied before infestation, the mortality of A. gossypii was 59.5% whereas, after the infestation, the mortality increased up to 77.6%. LC50 and LC90 extract of C. odollam seeds applied before and after infestation were 1.8%; 4.4%; 0.57% and 2.8% respectively. A. gossypii infested at 8 weeks old pepper and sprayed with C. odollam seed extract at a concentration of 1% lowered the crop damage on the seventh day after infestation. On the other hand, the application of C. odollam seed extract did not affect the number of leaves, fresh weight, and dry weight of pepper. This study indicate that C. odollam seed extract can be developed as a natural pesticide to control A. gossypii on pepper..

Abstract

Efficacy of Lemongrass and Soursop Leaf Extracts for Controlling ArmywOrm (Spodoptera litura J.E. Smith) Infestation in Green Mustard Cultivation]. Employing vegetable insecticide as a primary measure for controlling armyworms (Spodoptera litura) represents an environmentally friendly strategy to enhance yield. This research, conducted between December and February 2021 at the Plant Protection Laboratory and Plant Protection Gauze House, Faculty of Agriculture, Bengkulu University, aimed to determine the effective concentration of vegetable insecticides for managing armyworms infestation in green mustard. A randomized complete design (CRD) with six treatments and five replications was employed for the efficacy test. The treatments comprised: control, lemongrass extract, soursop leaf extract, lemongrass and soursop leaves extracts in a 1:1 ratio, lemongrass and soursop leaves extracts in a 1:2 ratio, and lemongrass and soursop leaves extracts in a 2:1 ratio. The results demonstrated that both lemongrass and soursop leaf extracts, either individually or in combination, effectively controlled S. litura larvae. Notably, an 8% concentration of citronella extract exhibited the highest mortality rate at 60%, with soursop leaves achieving 53.3%. In combination extracts, lemongrass and soursop leaves extracts in 1:1 and 2:1 ratio resulted in a 43.4% larvae control, while the ratio of lemongrass 1:2 to soursop leaves achieved a 36.6% larvae control. Overall, the research underscores the potential of vegetable insecticides, specifically lemongrass and soursop leaf extracts, as viable components of integrated pest management strategies to maintain crop yield in green mustard cultivation.
