Abstract

Hermeneutics is the task of interpreting in the area of action. The purpose of interpreting is the emancipation of a better and fairer life. One of the hermeneutic thinkers is Paul Ricoeur. Ricoeur’s hermeneutic project is built on criticism of the subject. Its purpose of producing a “transformation of subjectivity.” By undermining the illusion of the absolute, exploitative, and dominant matter manifested in the homo oeconomicus. This transformation of subjectivity can be used to analyze the area of action in public space. There are three hermeneutical tasks. The first is a hermeneutical task in poverty; the second is its task in the context of environmental damage (ecology). And the third is its task in the context of fighting economic and political injustice. All hermeneutical tasks are supported by the basic ethics of emancipation, namely “love and justice.”

Abstract

This article attempts to conceptualize the notion of ‘public sphere’ from the perspectives of Reformed theology and religious studies. This construction proceeds using a largely forgotten theological concept put forth by Calvin, namely the theater of God’s glory, in tandem with Ninian Smart’s phenomenological scaffold of the seven dimensions of religion. Through this constructive act, the author intends to demonstrate that Calvin’s concept of the theater of God’s glory can become a kind of ‘public sphere’ by means of an integration of thought with the aid of religious studies.

Abstract

This article discusses the utility of intersectional theology for understanding the contextual plurality of social identity within an Indonesian Sino-evangelical frame. My claim will be that the very multiplicity of social identity found in Sino-evangelical communities in Indonesia, which arises from the context of the May 1998 riots, serves as a theological resource that takes form according to certain heuristic trajectories. These trajectories stem from four well-attested characteristics of the Evangelical category itself, which in turn can be read through intersectional lenses. To achieve such an aim, I first explore the notion of plural identity vis-à-vis the label of Sino-evangelical in general. The essay then moves to discuss intersectional theology in light of what is characteristic about the category, Evangelical. Afterward, I explicate a key social context for the Sino-evangelical community, namely, the May 1998 riots. In the final section, I construct certain theologically heuristic trajectories according to an intersectional theological reading of the Sino-evangelical community, which is then framed according to four dimensions of David W. Bebbington’s (Evangelical) quadrilateral: conversionism, activism, biblicism, and crucicentrism.
