Abstract

The Javanese Traditional Carrying Tools are categorized into two kinds based used of materials: anyaman made of woven bamboo or rattan and the other was made of cloth. The Traditional Javanese Carrying Tools that were made of bamboo/ rattan is actually a kind of container with different shapes. The types of goods that were brought was related to the shapes of the containers, demonstrate the type of interactions between the carrier and the goods. The Traditional Carrying Tools made of cloth have the flexibility in terms of being the containers of the carried goods. Selendang is used to carry goods, including the bamboo/ rattan containers and to carry babies. It can be used rumpled and straightened depends on the technical needs of carrying tools preferred by the user. In contemporary culture, the form and design of carrying tools more less construct by fashion and trends besides those practical used. Some product are being 'classic', some other are being 'fad'. Both products, traditional and contemporary have their own style, uniqueness, and own context. Analyzing both in design point of view is important as evaluation process, to finding new problems that will be starting point to create new products. Indonesia is well known for its abundant richness in traditions, which include the culture, the art, and the traditional products. Such treasure of traditions can inspire the development and invention of various kinds of artwork and current products.

Abstract

Collaboration between craftsmen and product designers is one of the solutions for sustainable development of IKM products. Craftsmen need to be introduced to the creative process in producing new products. One that can be applied is Design Thinking. This process is considered in accordance with the way the craftsman works which generally "learning by doing" and not theoretical. Design Thinking process introduced in a workshop activity. The process of finding ideas begins by stimulating empathy to produce new ideas that are different from what they have been doing so far. Through this workshop several solutions were produced in the form of prototypes. This activity also produces a better work pattern that is more creative and productive in generating new ideas. The usage of story-telling in expressing ideas or thoughts is also preferebly and effective as a medium of discussion among craftsmen.

Abstract

Sustainable development (SD) is a global agenda that needs multi stakeholders participation to ensure it reaches the goals, including craft and design practitioners intervention. It shall begin with understanding what a certain kind of sustainability means at the practical level. Learning that traditional craft practice reflects the SD principles and the significance of objects as agencies, this paper unpack the kinds of objects in craft production and its agency endorse sustainable development principles. It used multiple sources within one research design by triangulating the data from multiple data collection methods: designer interviews; field research in a bamboo craft production in Tasikmalaya (Indonesia); and in a glassblowing workshop in Chicago (North America). The result shows that objects, such as material, tools, and space contribute to the harmony of social, environmental, and economic systems. Objects ‘kick back’ formulates production constraints in material sourcing and treatment, and capacity of production. It facilitates social capital that strengthens the social system in the community, and shapes craft production to focus on well-being instead of great income. Object agencies in craft production could inspire design intervention in sustainable development.

Abstract

AbstractThis Community Service Program (PKM) centers on product design mentorship for Jepara’s Furniture industry through the Jepara Design Collection (JDC) initiative. The program is a collaboration between the Indonesian Furniture Designers Association (HDMI) and the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI) Jepara, aiming to strengthen local industry capacity in creating original and competitive furniture products. The activities covered participant selection, industry visits, collaborative design development, prototype production, and a final exhibition at the Indonesia International Furniture Expo (IFEX) 2025. In total, 12 designers and 12 Furniture companies participated actively. The program outcomes include improved understanding among local producers of the strategic role of design, stronger partnerships between designers and manufacturers, and the creation of new furniture pieces that reflect Jepara’s local identity. Despite time constraints and coordination challenges, JDC has proven effective in enhancing innovation capacity and offers a replicable model for sustainable collaboration between designers and small- to medium-scale furniture industries.
