Abstract

In this paper, I argue that some entertainment companies of South Korea offer a distinctive business strategy in this globalized world; thus, they can widen their market share, increase profits, and sharpen their competitive edge. SM Entertainment, which is one of the Hallyu Wave pioneers in music industry, has showed its distinct way to succeed in the currently saturated market of idol groups in South Korea. Choosing Hallyu Wave from international business perspective as the main topic of this writing was due to its increasing importance in music industry and its growing influence in South Korean government policies. Therefore, I shall descriptively address the strategies formulated by SM Entertainment to compete in the domestic and international music industry from its way to groom their idol groups to its way to ‘sell’ them. This paper offers some business strategies of SM Entertainment of which some other companies could learn from; namely the distinct traineeship system, successful B2C strategy, and profitable B2B cooperation.

Abstract

Even though the volume of trade in goods and service increases in some advanced economy countries, trade in cultural goods and services remain in neglected terrain within multilateral frameworks. WTO has indeed highlighted the importance of cultural goods’ protection; however, its meaning and scopes, terms of protection, and dispute settlement on cultural goods and services have remained vague. On the other hand, UNESCO shed some lights on the trade of cultural goods and services, but some of the articles in its convention arises some contradiction with WTO clauses. The cases presented in this paper are all related to the culture trade, namely Canada for a periodical case (DS31), Turkey’s taxation of foreign film (DS43), Canada’s case on film distribution service (DS117), and China’s case on publications and audiovisual products (DS363). This paper aims to analyze how those cases were handled in the dispute settlement of WTO and supposed to be handled by both UNESCO and WTO. I would like to draw some lessons from the inadequate dispute settlement in WTO on culture trade, then proceed to formulate some suggestions of how cultural trade-related disputes are supposed to be formulated.

Abstract

ASEAN countries show tremendous potential for e-commerce growth. Boasting its 650 million population and massive internet users, ASEAN proves to be a significant market for e-commerce and digital economy in general. Nonetheless, there are still some significant barriers in e-commerce trade, both traditional and non-traditional barriers of trade. Those barriers include a lack of harmonized regulations between the ASEAN Member States, high tariff duties on imported goods, and weak consumer protections (and overall cybersecurity) in the region. This study explores these barriers, which hinder ASEAN's goal to achieve more robust growth in the digital economy, particularly in terms of the legal framework (custom harmonization) and cybersecurity. In order to delve more deeply into these impediments of e-commerce trade, this article also attempts to present a study case of Indonesia's e-commerce as the most prominent and most promising player in ASEAN. Keywords: ASEAN, e-commerce, digital trade, digital economy  Negara-negara ASEAN menunjukkan potensi luar biasa bagi pertumbuhan e-commerce. Kata-kata kunci: ASEAN, e-commerce, perdagangan digital, ekonomi digital

Abstract

South Korea has been hailed as one of the most successful countries in containing the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, within a relatively short period. Some argued that East Asian countries’ success could be attributed to Confucianist culture, to which I disagree. In this paper, I shall describe in details how Korean government managed to curb the Covid-19 spread with the combination of epidemiological investigation, advanced technology, and haste (빨리 빨리) culture, leading to a hurry-hurry strategy unique to South Korea. I would also outline some social impacts on LGBT-Q communities and the exclusion of foreign residents in South Korean pandemic efforts. Keywords: South Korea, COVID-19, hurry-hurry strategy. Kata-kata kunci: Korea Selatan, COVID-19, hurry-hurry strategy.

Abstract

This paper examines the American Revolution as an inspiration for Indonesia's founding fathers to fight for their nation's independence in 1945. This paper was sparked by the existence of  the pamphlet ‘It's 1776 in Indonesia' published in 1948 in the United States which presupposes the link between Indonesian Revolution and the American Revolution. The basic assumption of this paper is that Indonesian founding fathers were inspired by the experiences of other nations, including the Americans who abolished the British colonization of 13 colonies in North American continent in the eigthenth century. American inspiration on the struggle for Indonesian independence was examined from the spoken dan written words of three Indonesian founding fathers: Achmad Soekarno, Mohamad Hatta and Soetan Sjahrir. This examination produced two findings. First, the two Indonesian founding fathers were inspired by the United States in different capacities. Compared to Hatta and Sjahrir, Soekarno referred and mentioned the United States more frequent. Second, compared to the inspirations from other nations, American inspiration for the three figures was not so strong. This was because the liberal democratic system and the American-chosen capitalist system were not the best alternative for Soekarno, Hatta and Sjahrir. Therefore, the massive exposition of the 1776 Revolution in 1948 was more of a tactic on the Indonesian struggle to achieve its national objectives at that time, as it considered the United States as the most decisive international post-World War II political arena.
