Abstract

The research entitled Survival of Klenengan Tuesday Legen at Balai Soedjatmoko Surakarta was motivated by the existence of an activity held at Balai Soedjatmoko. This activity aims to provide a platform for musical groups who feel marginalized. This activity is held every 35 days by inviting musical groups from various cities to ensure that musical arts and activities continue to develop and survive. Based on this background, the problems were revealed in this study. (1) What is the basic concept of the Klenengan Tuesday Legen activity at the Soedjatmoko Hall? (2) Why does the Klenengan Tuesday Legen activity persist at the Soedjatmoko Hall? This research is qualitative research using the descriptive-analytical method. The author uses the thoughts of William and Achsan (Achsan Permas et al., 2003). With this approach, we get an overview of the Soedjatmoko Balai Soedjatmoko Klenengan and the factors causing the Soedjatmoko Hall's survival. Based on observations, the involvement of the implementing management of Klenengan Tuesday Legen Balai Soedjatmoko was one of the factors driving the sustainability of the activity. The activities carried out by the management include planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling activities. Through activities based on member motivation and external stimulation, efforts are being made to maintain klenengan activities on Tuesday Legen Balai Soedjadmoko. The member's motivation is in the form of a desire to express a sense of pleasure for musical instruments gathering with people who have the same interest in the arts. Stimulation that affects the survival of Klenengan Tuesday Legen is the support from Bentara Budaya.

Abstract

The research entitled "Kenong Goyang: A Study on Musical Work in Surakarta Style Karawitan" is a type of qualitative research using an analytical descriptive approach. This study refers to the musical aspect of traditional Javanese music, namely karawitan. This research aims to explain and investigate musical garap as well as the formation factors of garap kenong goyang by using the garap theory from Rahayu Supanggah. While the formation factor of working on kenong goyang caused by the arrangement of the balungan and working on the instrumen kendang as well as other supporting factors such as the form of the cultivator's gending and style. Based on written evidence, working on kenong goyang only occurs in the ladrang form of gending, namely, ladrang Sobrang pelog barang, ladrang Surung Dayung pelog nem, ladrang Kuwung pelog barang and ladrang Lengker pelog nem. However, in accordance with the development of work, kenonggoyang can also be served or worked into the slendro tuning system. With a note the shape and name of the gending is the same as the classification of the gending in the pelog tuning system which is adjusted to the balungan arrangement.  Kenong goyang is free or loose. This means that it can be served using kenong goyang or not, it depends on the gending treatment.

Abstract

This article antitled “The existence of Suyarto As a Sinden Lanang:a Biography” is based on the research by Endah Ayu Prasetyo, primarily examines the existence of Suyarto as a sinden lanang who existed in between 1995-2006.  There are two important issues subject to discussion which are 1) how was the process oftransforming and developing artistry of Suyarto as a sinden lanang until he became famous? and 2) why in between 1995 and 2006 Suyarto’s name was known as sinden lanang?.  Suyarto, who came from a farming family and only attended elementary school, was able to become a successful male sinden in 1995-2006. This research  describes Suyarto’s artistic experience to reach his existence.  The study uses a historical approach by Kuntowijoyo, especially biographies which examine the character’s personality, supportive social forces, historical circumstances of his era, and luck and opportunity. This thought is synergized with Alvin Boskoff’s theory, that a change is influenced by internal and external factors.Collecting the necessary data was carried out by following qualitative research procedures and oral history. Apart from literary data and artifacts, the informants’ testimonies against Suyarto are also a very important source of data in this research.
