Abstract

This article reported a qualitative study that examined the use of debate to promote students’ reflective understanding of research ethics. The study was conducted in a qualitative methodology class for undergraduate students in psychology. Data were collected from 36 students attending the class by using an open-ended questionnaire. There were four questions in the questionnaire which were intended to gauge students’ understanding of ethical issues in qualitative research. The questionnaire was distributed twice, before and after the students engaged in the debate. During the debate, the students had to argue about dilemmatic research situations that reflected ethical issues in research. Thematic analysis was used to qualitatively examine and compare the students’ responses, before and after the debate. The findings suggested four themes that represented a shift in the students’ understanding of research ethics. These themes indicated the emergence of more contextual and reflective views of research ethics among the students.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article describes the experiences of families from lower middle socio-economic levels who have children with multiple disabilities. The experiences of these families are then analyzed in relation to the concept of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to explore social intervention models and strategies that may promote a more just, inclusive, and sustainable society. This article was developed based on the researchers’ involvement in a support group for families from lower middle socio-economic levels who have children with multiple disabilities. In addition, this article was also specifically prepared based on the experiences of producing a participatory video making that involved four families in the support group being studied. Qualitative data which became the main data source for this article were obtained from several data collection processes that occurred during the production of the documentary video. The data collection processes included two focus group discussions and two semi-structured interviews with each family. The data were analysed by using thematic analysis techniques. The overall findings of this research are summarized in two major themes, namely "the need for comprehensive and integrative assistance" and "the need to strengthen the role of local communities". These two themes are then discussed in relation to the concept of SDGs and the Indonesian policies on disabilities.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to develop the role of peer support groups as a source of social support for families with children experiencing disabilities. The activity was conducted in the form of a capacity-building session for parents who have children with disabilities, organized by the Komunitas Kasih, under the Catholic religious congregation Faithful Companions of Jesus. Preventing the exploitation of children with disabilities was the theme of the capacity-building session. Through presentations by an expert speaker, participants received information about the forms of exploitation of the rights of children with disabilities and steps to prevent it. Participant evaluations indicated that this activity was considered beneficial, as it provided opportunities to connect with families facing similar situations and offered new insights into ways to protect the rights of children with disabilities.
