Abstract

This study aims to investigate the rhetorical structure of move and step of short lecture by famous applied linguist Jack C. Richards posted on YouTube. The data of this study were 22 video-transcripts of a short lecture of Jack C Richards. The results: (1) three moves of rhetorical structure such as M1 – Introduction, M2 – Content of Short Lecture, and M3 – Conclusion. They are 100% occurred in all of the data analyzed as obligatory category. (2) the most often found steps in the short lectures that occurred 100% and classified as obligatory category, such as M2SB – Argumentation of the short lecture and M3SA – Summarizing the points and the steps with 60-99% percentage of occurrences as classified as conventional category, namely are M1SE – Announcing topic of oral presentation, M1SA – Greeting the Audience, M2SC – Illustration of short lecture, and M2SA – Description of short lecture. The new proposed model of spoken genre analysis adapted from Ali and Singh (2019), the Sermon model by Cheong cited in Safnil (2010) and Seliman (1996) for identifying the rhetorical structure of short lecture is effective enough to capture the possible rhetorical moves and steps in a whole text of short lecture by famous applied linguist posted in YouTube.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out a content analysis of character values in the English students’ textbooks for senior high school 10th grade, 11th grade and 12th grade and the dominant differences of character from all the books. This research employed qualitative method by using content analysis. For this research mainly character values in the textbooks was carried out. The data in this research were all passages that taken from the three English sudents’ textbooks for senior high school. This research used observation check list as the instruments to evaluate coursebooks in an effective and practical way. The researcher has analyzed the data based character values found on the three books. And all of the dominants character values that the researcher were found.

Abstract

Stance Expression indicates feelings, certainty or uncertainty, and interests of the authors. As the increasing needs of the readers on significant findings from the introduction section of Research Articles, a study on Stance Expression of introduction section in the English research articles written by Cambodian authors has been conducted to employ crucial aims of the study: (1) examine stance expression types and the categories of each type; (2) compare the similarities and differences of stance expression types used in the introduction section of English RAs written by Cambodian authors published in local and international journals. Thirty research articles written by Cambodian authors published in local and international journals were used in this study. To fulfill these research objectives, the mixed-method research design was utilized in this study. All the four stance features, such as Hedges, Boosters, Attitude Markers, and Self-expression, proposed by Hyland (2005) were used as a Lexical analysis framework model in this study. The results revealed that four stance expression types were found in this study. The hedge was the most frequently employed among the other types of stances. There is a significantly different in terms of the frequencies of hedge used within both RA journals, but there is no for booster, attitude marker, and self-mention. Local Cambodian authors should follow the international authors as models in applying stance in their RAs.  A  comparison study of the stance expression and engagement between Cambodian and international authors in the introduction should be expanded more different articles from available journals.Keywords: English research article, introduction section, stance expression, local journals, international journals

Abstract

Pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar berbasis budaya lokal merupakan kegiatan yang memberikan dampak positif bagi guru bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, pengabdian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengimplementasikan pelatihan pengembangan bahan ajar bahasa Inggris berbasis budaya lokal yang ada di Sumatera Selatan, khususnya di kota Pagar Alam. Pengabdian ini melibatkan 40 guru SMA bahasa Inggris dan menggunakan angket untuk menilai pelatihan yang dilakukan. Data pengabdian ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan perhitungan sederhana berupa frekuensi dan presentasi serta rata-rata. Selain itu, data pengabdian dianalisis secara kualititatif dengan menggunakan catatan selama pelatihan. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa para guru bahasa Inggris sangat antusias untuk mengikuti pelatihan. Pelatihan berjalan dengan lancar dimana para guru bisa mempraktikan pengembangan bahan ajar berbasis budaya lokal dengan memasukkan unsur budaya pada materi atau teks yang berhubungan dengan budaya lokal tersebut. Selain itu, para guru memberikan persepsi yang positif terhadap pelatihan ini. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan kebanyakan guru memilih setuju dan sangat setuju terhadap angket yang diberikan. Secara singkat, pelatihan ini perlu mendapatkan follow up demi pengembangan profesionalisme guru bahasa Inggris.
