Abstract

Developments in the area of task-based language teaching (TBLT) research have focused on the task implementation factors in that they effectively promote successful language performances. The present study aimed to examine the effect of task repetition on the speaking performances of students who studied English Specific Purposes at an Indonesian Maritime Vocational School. To this end, a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was applied that involved 43 participants, who were non-randomly selected and considered as two groups of the experimental and control ones. Both groups took a pre-test to ensure their homogeneity in speaking skill. For 12 sessions, the experimental group was engaged in repetitive practice of speaking tasks. Three weeks after the end of the treatment, both groups performed the two post-tests. The results of independent samples t-tests showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed their counterparts in the control group in terms of task complexity on the two post-test phases (p<.05). However, they did not differ significantly in terms of accuracy.

Abstract

This report is part of a larger study concerning teachers’ belief towards materials development and their effectiveness in professional development (PD) in Indonesia. This case study attempted to explore how the Indonesian teachers’ beliefs towards materials development for vocational school students in Indonesia. Seven out of thirteen English teachers of vocational schools in Indonesia are involved in this project and were interviewed and observed. They are developing materials for vocational schools. Findings show that teachers believed that they had some considerations to check what has contained the textbook's development. Their beliefs were influenced by some factors such as experience, needs, situation, students’ interest, students’ ability, workshop, and references. Also, the teachers' deficient time and different views were two major problems faced by the teachers when conducting materials selection and analysis—implications for how teachers’ perception toward English materials development in vocational schools.

Abstract

This paper describes discrete and integrated approach and the implication on language teaching learning management. Discrete approach emphasizes on the teaching and learning a language discretely, whereas integrated approach emphasizes on the whole language, namely speaking, writing, listening, reading, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. In fact, both are interrelated since discrete learning is the basis for integrated learning. Both should be implemented in the teaching learning process in the classroom so that students are able to use the language well. Therefore, the curriculum or the syllabus, teaching materials, teachers’ qualification, and classroom management should be prepared well.
