Abstract

During the colonial period journeys were acts of conquest, attempts to create order by limiting the world through which one passed by what could be seen and charted. Postcolonial journeys, however, seek the freedom offered by a delimited environment and use it as a site of resistance against an oppressive power. An early Indonesian example, although by no means the earliest, can be found in ZuberUsmans Tamasya dengan Perahu Bugis. Written in 1943, during the Japanese occupation, the short story details a mans trip from Surabaya to Makassar. Although it remains presented in colonial terms, the story offers postcolonial techniques, including an emphasis on the journey itself and the possibility of an unending journey, rendering the colonial techniques used a replay of the colonial journey. Through this, the story succeeds in sending a message that the Japanese overlords were unable to completely subjugate the Indonesian people through colonisation: chaos is still possible.Key words : Zuber Usman, Pascakolonial, Perjalanan pascakolonial

Abstract

The Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies in 1942 did nothing to kill the blossoming nationalism which had swept throughout the colony in since the early 20th century. Although the Japanese viewed Indonesia as a source of resources to fuel their war efforts, training Indonesians to protect this vision, the Indonesians themselves used the situation to modernise their military techniques in preparation for a revolution. Such efforts are evident in Kami, Perempuan, a short stage play from 1943 written by Armijn Pane. In showing the interactions between the spaces of the individual and the nation, he ignores the implications of the new military units intended purpose and, as such, renders it unimportant. He also expresses concern that the individualistic and self-serving ideals promoted by the Dutch colonials would hinder the cause for freedom.Key words : Armijn Pane, Kami Perempuan, Nationalism, PETA.

Abstract

Abstract

JacquesLacan’s poststructuralist theories of psychology have greatly affected modern understandings of the human psyche. This is evident in literary studies, where numerous thinkers – including Lacan himself – have applied these theories to better understand works of literature. One work which benefits from such an application is Ahmad Tohari’s Kubah, a 1982 novel on the ex-communist Karman’s seeming redemption after spending twelve years as a political prisoner. This paper will use a Lacanian psychoanalysis to show how Karman’s need to find wholeness, one which has been lost since before his birth, led to his various activities, including the joining of the Communist Party and his return to Islam. Although the novel ends on a hopeful note, it will be shown that Karman has not truly found the wholeness for which he has searched.

Abstract

Access to information is a fundamental requirement for developing quality humanresources. One prominent source of such information is Wikipedia, a website whichadvertises itself as "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit". This paper, which isbased on participatory action, observational, and library research conducted over aperiod of ten years, describes the multicultural dynamics of the Indonesian-languageWikipedia (WPID) after first situating it within the context of the global Wikimediamovement. Established in 2003, WPID freely (in both the libre and gratis sense) offersmore than 380,000 articles with a wide range of information which can be used forhuman resources building. Its more than 2,200 active users, originating from variedbackgrounds, (re)produce knowledge through several means, including writing originaltext based on their understandings of existing sources and translating articles which existon other Wikipedias. This combination of actors, approaches, and content has led tocomplex interactions between the (primarily Western) culture of the global Wikimediamovement, the mixed cultures of source articles, and the Indonesian/local cultures of theactors. This article argues that WPID has organically negotiated a compromise betweenthese at times conflicting cultural dynamics to create a hybrid source of information. Keywords: Crowdsourcing, knowledge production, knowledge reproduction, Wikipedia
