Abstract

The objective of this research is to improve students’ speaking ability using Think-Pair-Share of cooperative learning for the students of Agrotechnology department Universitas Gunung Leuser. This particular research was categorized as action research. The actions were implemented in two cycles based on the class schedule. This research involved 33 students of Agrotechnology departmentin the academic year of 2018/ 2019 and the English lecturer as the research collaborator. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the students of Agrotechnology department and the English lecturer. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired conducting through the pre-test, the progress test, and the post test. The validity of the data was obtained by applying democratic, dialogic, catalytic, and outcome validity. The procedure of the research consisted of reconnaissance, planning, acting, reflecting, and revising plan. The results of this research show that the use of the Think-Pair-Share technique was able to improve the students’ speaking ability. Based on the qualitative data, applying Think-Pair-Share technique gave the students more chances to speak in English. The students became more confident to speak up English. They actively participated during the teaching and learning process. The use of classroom English helped the students to be more familiar with English. The vocabulary practice and pronunciation drill also helped them to enrich their vocabulary knowledge and build their accuracy. These findings were also supported by the result of the students’ speaking scores. The mean improved from 58.55 in Cycle I to 77.60 in Cycle II. It indicated that they made a considerable improvement in some aspect of speaking skills such as pronunciation, intonation and stress, comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the translation field, focusing on conjunctive relation in the process of English-Indonesian translation. Regarding the research methodology, having a focus on content analysis of qualitative method, observation and note taking method are applied for the data collection. The subject matter of the study is the conjunctive relation found in the novel Eat, Pray, and Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and its translation Makan, Doa, dan Cinta applying the theory proposed by Halliday, also involving the occurrence of the eight procedures of translation proposed by Newmark and loss and gain of information proposed by Nida. In relation to the explanation above, it is hoped that by recognizing conjunctive relation and the theory loss and gain of information, the translator will be able to pinpoint and restate meaning more effectively, so that it will be easier to get the intended meanings that want to be translated. Based on the analysis, it is found that all the conjunctive relation types in the data and some of the procedures proposed by Newmark occurs in the novel, and loss and gain of information also occurs in some processes of transferring the message of the conjunctive relation in the SL text into the TL text

Abstract

Community service is an important effort in strengthening the relationship between universities and the community. This article discusses the Community Service Program through the Community Service Lecture Program (KPM) of Gunung Leuser University in Darul Amin Village, Southeast Aceh Regency. The introduction of this article highlights the importance of community service in the context of higher education and society. The objective of this program is to improve the quality of life for the community through various activities that involve active participation from the community itself. The community service method employed is Participation Action Research (PAR), which involves active community participation in the research process and implementation of solutions. Through PAR steps such as joint problem identification, planning, action, and joint reflection, the community and students collaborate to identify the main issues in Darul Amin Village and design solutions that align with the community's needs and aspirations. The results of this program demonstrate significant improvements in community participation, strengthened local capacity, and sustainable problem-solving. The conclusion of this article emphasizes the importance of collaboration between universities and communities in enhancing collective well-being and highlights the success of the PAR approach in achieving community service objectives.
