Abstract

Islam as a universal religion has emerged and developed within diverse social and cultural contexts. In Southeast Asia, the process of Islamization occurred through peaceful and dialogical mechanisms of cultural acculturation. This phenomenon has significantly influenced the patterns of Qur’anic interpretation that developed in the region. This article aims to examine the concept of local cultural acculturation in Qur’anic exegesis by analyzing the thoughts of Southeast Asian mufassirs. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, along with descriptive-analytical analysis of representative tafsir works from Southeast Asia. The findings indicate that Southeast Asian mufassirs integrate local cultural values into Qur’anic interpretation as long as they do not contradict the fundamental principles of Islam. Such acculturation is reflected in the language of interpretation, socio-cultural approaches, and an emphasis on values of moderation, tolerance, and social harmony. Thus, Qur’anic exegesis in Southeast Asia represents a contextual interpretive model that reinforces an inclusive image of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin.

Abstract

The development of Qur'anic interpretation in the contemporary era shows a tendency to be increasingly responsive to current issues such as socio-political issues, feminism, and the ecological crisis. This article aims to analyze and compare the exegetical methodologies developed by Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern scholars over the past five years. Using a library study approach in reputable scientific journals, this study finds that Southeast Asian scholars tend to prioritize sociological contextual interpretations rooted in local realities, while Middle Eastern scholars emphasize the maqāṣid al sharī‘ah approach and critical hermeneutics. These differences demonstrate the epistemological diversity of contemporary exegesis and open up space for methodological dialogue between regions.

Abstract

The phenomenon of women growing up without a father (fatherlessness) is increasingly found in urban communities and has implications for their moral, emotional, and identity development. This study aims to examine how urban female university students in Pontianak City who experience fatherlessness construct Islamic moral values through their understanding of Qur’anic Surah Luqmān (31):17. This research employs a phenomenological approach supported by tafsīr analysis to explore how the students’ emotional, spiritual, and social experiences influence the internalization of the values of prayer (ṣalāh), enjoining good (amr maʿrūf), forbidding evil (nahy munkar), and patience (ṣabr). Data were collected through literature review, social observation, and in-depth interviews with fatherless female students. The findings reveal that the absence of a father contributes to a more independent and reflective process of moral formation. The students interpret Surah Luqmān (31):17 not merely as a normative command but as a moral guideline that shapes their daily conduct. These values help them respond to urban life challenges, manage emotions, and strengthen their personal identity. This study contributes to discussions on Islamic moral education by integrating lived experiences of fatherless female students with Qur’anic interpretation in the context of higher education and urban life.
