Abstract

Language variety is considered an integral part of human beings as the rightful owners of the language. However, due to scientfic developments, it seems that our understanding of language variety is only focused on the ability to create language varieties. Man forgets his nature as a creature and that there is a Creator who created all things on earth, including languages and their varieties. Therefore, the scientific view of language variety must be corrected using the Biblical perspective so that we as believers, created in God's image (imago dei), do not misunderstand that language variety occurs not because of man's creativity but because of God's grace and prophecy set forth in the writings and genres of the Bible long before language variety was a term used by science.  BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Ragam bahasa menjadi salah satu bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dengan manusia sebagai pemilik sah dari bahasa tersebut. Namun, akibat perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan, tampaknya pemahaman ragam bahasa sering sekali dititikberatkan pada kemampuan manusia itu menciptakan ragam bahasa. Manusia melupakan kodratnya sebagai ciptaan bahwa masih ada pencipta yang mengakibatkan segala sesuatu yang ada di dunia ini termasuk juga dengan bahasa dan ragam bahasa dapat terjadi. Oleh karena itu, pandangan ilmu pengetahuan akan ragam bahasa harus diluruskan melalui pandangan ragam bahasa dalam perspektif Alkitab agar kita sebagai orang yang percaya dan sebagai gambar dan rupa Allah (imago dei) tidak salah memahami bahwa ragam bahasa dapat terjadi bukan karena hasil kreativitas manusia, melainkan karena anugerah Tuhan dan nubutan Tuhan yang telah termaktub di dalam Alkitab jauh sebelum kita mengenal istilah ragam bahasa menurut ilmu pengetahuan dengan segudang penulisan  ragam bahasa dan genre yang ada di dalam Alkitab.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand the impact of man’s sinful nature as an inborn trait in humanity. The sinful nature of man becomes more complex in every aspect of his life. The method used in this research is literature study which seeks to analyze relevant bibliographies on several forms of human infatuation as the result of man’s sinful nature. From this study, it can be concluded that there are several forms of sinful human infatuation i.e. infatuation in the aspect of religion and God, in the aspect of technology and culture, and in the aspect of language and its application. But the emphasis here is on the infatuation in the aspect of language usage in the Indonesian context. One reason for this is that most people in our society tends to have greater love and pride in foreign languages. Such attitude in linguistics is known as xenoglosofilia. The impact of this infatuation on foreign languages is a lack of respect for one’s own native language, viewing it as less prestigious compared to other languages.
