Abstract

Buddhism aims to awake or, ultimately, enlighten the mind. Meditation practice is suggested as the best way to awake the mind, according to Zen. This reflection aimed to explore how Eihei Dogen, a Zen mas-ter, awakes and drawsthe reader or mediator to the point of utterly still meditation where no words and boundaries exist with a focus on one of his writing, The Zen Poetry of Dogen: Verses from the Mountain of Eternal Peace. This reflection also traced back the incident in Sutra that influenced his poetry. A conclu-sion that can be drawn upon this reflection reassures that the poetry of Dogen conveys the original, true es-sence of the mind as revealed in Sutra through Maha Kassapa’s enlightenment and how to practice the mind through various symbols. Abstract

Thailand has undergone continuing changes which affect all areas of education, including ESP education. To cope with all the changes including AEC in 2015, the ESP curriculum needs to be redesigned. This study was therefore to explore the perceptions and attitudes towards the redesigned English Business Communication. This study was based on triangulation. The instruments included an interview and a questionnaire. The subjects were 5 key informants whose main areas of expertise were ESP education, 70 graduates and students of English for Business Communication and 10 entrepreneurs. The informants were interviewed to elicit data for SWOT analysis while the graduates, the students and the entrepreneurs were surveyed through a questionnaire to elicit the data on the curriculum based on competency-based and holistic language learning. The SWOT analysis indicated that the redesigned curriculum should direct towards competence regarding to a combination of contents, skills and professional attitudes needed for effective communication and performance, a preparation for increased competition and changes, a response to internationalization, a shift from generalization to adaptive specialization, and sustainable quality orientation. The survey revealed that the respondents agreed that the curriculum could help prepare for AEC. The implication indicated that the ESP curriculum for changes should direct towards competency and the findings of this study will help facilitate further understanding and implementation of ESP in higher education. Future study should inquire the efficiency of this innovation. Keywords: ESP education, AEC of 2015, curriculum, competition, communication.

Abstract

Advertisements are valuable tools for ESL/EFL classrooms. Many instructors, however, tend to focus on enhancing language learning per se. With an experimental way, they are tools for discussions and analyses of contemporary cultural issues. To utilize the mass media in the classrooms, CLL and project work are suggested to be effective tools for this. The main purpose of the study was therefore to explore whether CLL and project work were effective for enhancing the discussions and analyses of cultural issues in Thai advertisements. The results of the study revealed that, cognitively and culturally, some advertisements provided a stimulating approach to discussions and analyses of the cultural issues since their contents contained highly cultural insights of the issues which provided topics for discussions and analyses. Communicatively, the discussions enhanced more active roles among the group communication, group interaction and dynamics, and communication skills. Linguistically, the discussions improved their speaking and writing skills. Pedagogically, the increased skills enhanced their L2 learning. This study, however, limits to a Thai EFL classroom and monocultural society. The replication with other EFL classrooms and in plural and intercultural societies is needed. Keywords: advertisements, cultural discussion, CLL, project work teaching
