Abstract

This study was conducted on the bases of the preliminary study in SMP Negeri 2 Unaaha in which the researcher found that about 27,3% of the students in Grade VIIIb had lack ability in vocabulary. As an attempt to overcome the students’ difficulty in vocabulary mastery, the researcher/teacher gave audio visual. This study took the design of classroom action research because it was aimed at improving the existing condition in carrying out this study, the researcher acted as an observer. Design of this study was an action research the study was carried out in two cycles containing of four steps such as planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of the study was all students of Grade VIIIb which consist of 22 students who registered in the academic year 2016/2017. The date were collected through three research istruments: vocabulary test, observation sheet, and field note. All of the date were analyzed, and the result of the analysis was compared to the criteria of success defined in this study to see whether yes or not they were achieved. The target of the study was students comprehended the vocabulary if minimally 75% of them got standard score 65. The result of the study showed that by giving audio visual could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It indicated that students at Grade VIIIb of SMP Negeri 2 Unaaha achieved the target on cycle II. It means that students’ vocabulary mastery could be improved by giving audio visual. In the cycle I, students who got standard score ≥65 only 54,6%. It means that not got standard indicator of successfulness. Then researcher continued the research at the cycle II for got standard score ≥65 only 81,9%. It means that got standard indicator of successfulness. This result indicated that by giving audio visual could improve students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This research study investigated a study about improving student’s vocabulary ability through talking stick technique at grade VIIA of SMPN 3 Tongauna. The objective of the study was to find out whether talking stick method can improve students’ vocabulary ability. This research applied classroom action research design. Focus on four steps, namely planning, action, observation and reflection. The subject of was students grade VIIA of SMPN 3 Tongauna with the total number of students was 30, consisted 12 females and 18 males. This research was conducted temporary in two cycles where each cycles consist of one meeting of treatment and one meeting for evaluation. This research also implemented vocabulary test (qualitative) and observation sheet (quantitative) as the data of the research. The expected target of students‘ vocabulary ability was 80% the students got standard score 65. Based on the result of this study, it showed that there was an improvement of students’ vocabulary ability at grade VILA of SMPN 3 TONGAUNA the result in the pre-observation 1453 (20%) or 6 students improved, next in the cycle I, there was only 2032 (60%)or 18 students improved. Those are reflected an improved to the next cycle. In the cycle H there researcher found that was more progress than in previous cycle. The percentage of students vocabulary achievement in second cycle was 2359 (87%) or 26 students improved, the result of post test was 2372 (90%) or 27 students improved. Which the vocabulary of students is very good categories. Because the target plan was achieved. There for the treatment stopped based on the result of data it can be conclude that talking stick technique could improve students’ vocabulary ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to know whether crossword puzzle can improve student vocabulary ability the research methodology used in this research was classroom action research. The place of this research was at second grade of MTs N 2 Konawe. The subject of this research was class B which consists of 28 students. To find the improvement of students' vocabulary ability, the researcher used multiple choice tests. There were two cycles; each cycle consisted of two meetings and each meeting consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The researcher found that the students involved actively in teaching learning processes, they more encouraged and were enjoyed in studying English than before. The result of students vocabulary test on pre test 9 students or 36% who got score above the Minimum Mastery Criterion meanwhile the other 19 students were below criterion, the first cycle 16 students or 64 % who got score above the Minimum Mastery Criterion meanwhile the other 11 students were below criterion. Then, on second cycle there are 22 students or 80 % who got score above the Minimum Mastery Criterion meanwhile the other 3 students were below criterion. So the result of students’ achievement increases (16%) between cycle 1 and cycle 2. The last meeting crosswords puzzle applied teaching vocabulary ability of classification words as bellow: verb, noun, adverb and adjective could be effective improved vocabulary ability. Base on the result of the study concluded learning trough crossword puzzle suitable improve vocabulary ability students’.
