Abstract

This article revisits the position of the institutional church in the ecclesiology of Abraham Kuyper (1837—1920). Following the growing interest in the life and work of Kuyper in North America, some scholars pay attention to the importance of his ecclesiology. However, it is common to consider that Kuyper in his later life preferred the aspect of the church as organism and thus marginalizing the church as institution. After exploring his ecclesiological concept on the distinction of the church as organism and institution, this paper examines several major works of Kuyper on the institutional church written in his later life. Finding that Kuyper consistently viewed the institutional church highly, I argue that his restriction toward the church as insitution is to strengthen and provide a stable position of the institutional church in modern society. KEYWORDS: Kuyper, church as institution, church as organism, public theology

Abstract

This article tries to further the suggestion of utilizing the concept of common grace popularized by Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) for facing changes in hermeneutics. Hermeneutics has changed in many ways because of the influences of modernism and postmodernism. In contrast to more liberal theologians who promote those changes actively, evangelical theologians tend to response negatively or hesitantly. After describing briefly those hermeneutical changes, this article investigates Kuyper’s doctrine of common grace. As conclusion, it provides some suggestions on to what extent the concept of common grace can be utilized for reconsidering changes in hermeneutics as favourable opportunities to develop more the field of hermeneutics.

Abstract

This article explores several responses of Japanese Evangelical Christians to Japanese nationalism, which tends to be fascist as appeared in the issue of constitutional revision. While commending their fights with this complicated issue, by using the critical contextualization approach from the discipline of intercultural theology, this article also shows their limitations in producing solutions to the deadlock between the camp fighting for the constitutional revision and those who resist the proposed amendments. The evangelical figure who uses Kuyperian principles such as the Christian worldview, common grace, and sphere sovereignty yields a response that is arguably more comprehensive and has prospects to be accepted by non-Christians, including the revisionist camp. To Japanese evangelicals who tend to withdraw from socio-political engagements, I argue for utilizing the ecclesiological suggestions of Abraham Kuyper. Particularly, his assertion to keep the church free from the state and Kuyper's distinction of the church's aspects between organism and institution, are beneficial to continue and develop participation in responding to the amendments and other inter-connected nationalism issues.

Abstract

From the perspective of historical theology, the perception of history is an example of the importance of studying history. Narratives that are widely circulated and believed by many people do not necessarily have historical facts. Research to find and carefully examine historical facts can make one revise previously held perceptions of history. Historical theology research is no less important in the theology field than other branches of theology, such as biblical, systematics, and practical theology. From research on concepts, events, and characters in church history, Christians and the church today can understand the causes of various mistakes that have occurred in the past so that they can avoid making similar mistakes. In addition, we can also strive to develop Christian teachings and practices that are faithful to the Bible to answer the challenges of the times. Although not all of them fall into the category of historical theology, the articles in this edition are examples of efforts to explore theology and theological methods using a historical theological approach.
