Abstract

Manual production of coconut shell briquettes in small and medium-scale industries often faces limitations in productivity, product uniformity, and dependence on human labor. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency improvement of coconut shell briquette production through the use of a 10 kg-capacity briquetting machine. An experimental method was applied by comparing mechanical briquetting and manual hand-pressing using the same raw material composition, namely 7 kg of coconut shell charcoal powder, 3 kg of tapioca starch adhesive, and 1 liter of water as a mixing aid. The observed parameters included production capacity, production time, physical quality score, quality consistency, and electrical energy consumption. The results showed that the machine produced 10 kg of briquettes in 1 hour, whereas the manual method produced approximately 3.3 kg per hour and required about 3 hours to reach the same production quantity. The machine increased production capacity by approximately 200% and reduced production time by approximately 67%. The physical quality score increased from 70% to 85%, while quality consistency increased from 80% to 95%. Although the machine consumed 0.5 kWh per process, the energy requirement was relatively low, equivalent to 0.05 kWh/kg of briquettes. These findings indicate that the 10 kg-capacity briquetting machine is feasible as an appropriate technology to improve productivity and product uniformity for small and medium-scale coconut shell briquette producers.

Abstract

Charcoal briquettes are an environmentally friendly alternative energy source; however, conventional production is hampered by the slow and labor-intensive manual molding process. This study aims to improve production efficiency for farmers in Lalan, Musi Banyuasin, by designing and testing a screw-type charcoal briquette press machine powered by an electric motor. The machine is designed with a capacity of 10 kg per cycle, using coconut shell charcoal powder as the test material. The research methods include the design, fabrication, and performance testing through a comparative study of the machine and manual molding processes, as well as product uniformity evaluation. The results show a significant increase in production rate. The screw machine is able to produce an average of 24 briquettes in 50 seconds, while the manual method only produces 5 briquettes in the same time, indicating an approximately 4.8-fold increase in output. The machine's measured capacity reaches 32.29 kg/hour under extended testing conditions, and the briquettes produced are uniform according to the mold. Based on the test results, the machine demonstrates greater efficiency as the molding time increases, with a total output of 144 briquettes in 300 seconds, while the manual method only produces 30 briquettes in the same time. This study concludes that the implementation of the screw-type briquette press machine effectively accelerates the production process, reduces reliance on manual labor, and has the potential to increase the economic value of biomass waste for small- to medium-scale enterprises.
