Abstract

In real life, Human being never be separated from ethics; A kind of topic that thediscussion will not be separated from good and evil. Because good and evil become the field of discussion, it will be closely related to human behavior or morals. Today’s problem, own morals, in post-modern times such as having missed directions. The values of good and evil, kind a look vague. Because of moral in this prespective; Good and evil is based on human reason an sich. This fact can not be separated from the influence of Western culture which removes the element of metaphysics in its moral ethics. Thus, Religion has no moral authority. So God and revelation have no place in their “framework.” This paper tries to explain some facts related to moral ethics. By presenting some explanations of how moral ethical discourse in the West, as well as presenting the concept of “Virtue Ethics” initiated by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to construct and employ a critical study to Frithjof Schuon’ thought on epistemology which includes the nature of knowledge, the object of knowledge and the process of acquiring knowledge. This study is a literature research which utilize his scientific works both primary and secondary sources. The results showed that Schuon epistemology could not eluded the paradigm of Western dualism as truth and certainty viewed double, which are relative truth and absolute truth. Relative truth and certainty of the truth according to Schuon are obtained through religious dogma, but the total truth and certainty of ‘being’ could only be obtained through spiritual realization, namely gnosis or metaphysics. Thus, religious knowledge status which derived from revelation is lower than the metaphysical knowledge derived from the intellect through meditation. It is conclude that Schuon’s view is very much contrary to the principles of Islamic epistemology. Islam has asserted al- Qur’an as an authentic revelation from Allah SWT and acknowledged it as the highest source of knowledge. Epistemology of Islam never affirms the necessity of spiritual realization through meditation to enhance the revelation.

Abstract

The Western’s conception of  values, morals and ethics are so different with Islamic conception. In fact, there is difference about it between western scholars. These is a consequence from secularization that spread upon the whole Europe  after  their  people’s  believe  of  church’s  conductiveness  disappeared. This secularization impacts to the separation between religion’s doctrines and life activities as politic, education even to the marriage. In the end, Western society  considers  the  values  of  religion  are  just  subjective  phenomenal  that experienced by individual and are not universally. Religion has space its self that different  with  space  of  non-religion. The  value  and  moral  concept in West would  be  evolved  and  developed  according  to  western  society’s  conception of  human  being  reality,  religion,  sciences  and  life  it’s self. This paper  has  a purpose to describes western scholar’s thoughts about values and moralities chronologically, starting from medieval centuries when Churches have the power of high legitimacy in western society until renaissance era and then describing about glorious era that the western scholar’s thoughts still influences the concept of values in this century.
