Abstract

The study of modernity reveals significant transformations in both space and time, accompanied by a shift from traditional to digital modes of thinking. Anthony Giddens, a prominent scholar in the discourse of modernity, emphasizes the interconnectedness of capitalism, industrialism, surveillance, and military power, highlighting their inseparability. Capitalism operates as a system of commodity production, centered on the relationship between private capital rights and labor devoid of ownership rights. Industrialism involves the efficient utilization of material resources for production purposes. Surveillance encompasses the collection, control, and supervision of information and individual activities, particularly in political domains. Meanwhile, military power characterizes a modern state's ability to monopolize the use of mobilizing forces. The main issue to be researched is how the interconnectedness of capitalism, industrialism, surveillance, and military power in the context of modernity influences the social dynamics of society. This research is significant in understanding the complex network of modern society and addressing the challenges faced, particularly regarding rapid social changes and the complexity of relationships between economic, political, and military forces.

Abstract

This research aims to thoroughly examine the concept of self-interest, human dignity, and the views of the Catholic Church in Indonesia. In the current era of disruption, individuals often pursue the maximization of their self-interests by any means necessary. This condition tends to lead individuals to look down upon others. The research adopts a qualitative methodology based on a literature review. The metadata for this study is sourced from books, online journals, and other secondary sources. The results indicate that by contemplating the meaning of self-interest and human dignity in accordance with Catholic Social Teaching, individuals can reconcile their desires for worldly domination. Thus, this research can contribute to the development of human quality of life in alignment with the teachings of the Church

Abstract

Women in patriarchal cultures have been treated unjustly. They are looked upon as second-class beings and even repeatedly not considered a whole human being. Their presence is regarded as something incidental and not essential. For this reason the article wants to put forward and to explore Nawal el Sa'adawi's ideas in her novel Woman at Point Zero. The novel portrays the struggle of a woman in a life full of oppressions by the patriarchal system and culture. Firdaus, the main character in the novel, is a picture of the lives of women who continue to serve as the number two beings in a patriarchal culture. In this article, the author uses feminist existentialist Simone de Beauvoir's point of view to analyze the novel. It appears that both Beauvoir and Sa'adawi have echoed some strategies towards a full freedom for women to be fully acknowledged of their existence and they provided further suggestions for women to be aware of their own capabilities as a whole human being and to be brave without being overshadowed by male superiority.

Abstract

This paper presents an attempt of a philosophical exploration using Paul Ricoeur’s theory of text interpretation on Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. When viewed in a glance, Waiting for Godot does not appear much as a conceptual drama. It talks about so many things, ranging from things that sound trivial to things that smell theological. However, if one delves deeper through different interpretation, this drama is indeed intricate enough to provoke fresh insights. Its complexity is reinterpreted here insofar this drama is imagined within the genre of absurd drama. According to Ricoeur, one of the goals of interpretation is not only to understand the mind of the author behind the text, but the text itself with its circulating meanings around its interpretation, that is, within its interpretative world. The text gives rise to things for the understanding of the reader or interpreter. In the light of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, this article attempts to reread some of the depths of Waiting for Godot. It is not so much of interpreting the intention of Samuel Beckett in writing the text as searching for different meanings in some parts of the dialogues in the text by way of engaging in its eventful discourse.

Abstract

Simone de Beauvoir and Emmanuel Levinas are two of the leading philosophers who gave rise to the idea of transcendence. While for Beauvoir transcendence is a fully human effort (particularly among women) to come out of the shackles of patriarchal culture, for Levinas transcendence extends to a broader scope, that is, to humanism as well as to the relationships among people. Beauvoir would see transcendence as women’s efforts to break out of the structures of patriarchy through the three strategies it offers, viz., that women must work, engage in intellectual activities, and become perpetrators of action for the sake of social transformation. As for Levinas, transcendence is closely associated with human face. The face is not merely an object of intentional consciousness, but representing the significance of human transcendence. Through the face, one might recognise the presence of others. On the other hand, it shows the face of infinite dimensions in such a way that it cannot be subdued by the attempts of human consciousness willing to master it.

Abstract

This article shows that what Foucault understands as genealogy is in many ways still in line with Nietzsche, that in terms of the basic concept of genealogy, using history, reveals the Herkunft – the origin of values that will dismantle the assumption of finality. Morality is born in the midst of a chaotic situation that forces individuals to make decisions and in the experience of a fragmented and unstable body. While through Entstethung one can see how the dominations that play behind any value are considered noble, the noble value is not in the hands of an independent subject. But there are also differences, since Foucault calls for the death of the subject, while Nietzsche is not up to that extreme. Another point of difference is that Foucault’s genealogy is practiced in a strict study discipline, wrestling with historical documents and writing down the detailed facts, while Nietzsche does not. The author argues that through Foucault’s thought, one might find a new meaning of the subject, that the subject is not an autonomous entity, but merely a production of power. The appearance of the subject is considered as a result of domination-relationships. In other words, these are the result of a disciplining effort.

Abstract

Jean-Paul Sartre offers a different way of looking at artworks. He offers psychological as well as phenomenological perspectives. The artworks referred to by Sartre include music, painting, literature, and theater. In his thoughts related to works of art, Sartre offers a notion of analogon, that has a key role to explain his concept of imagination. With this notion, he goes further to explain the concept of irreality in artworks, of which analogon is a medium or a material vehicle. When enjoying an artwork, one is enjoying the analogon. Music can be seen as an excess of reality, literature finds its role within its social environment, a painting provokes a viewer to rise certain images in his or her cosciousness, and an actor in theater not simply portrays the characters of a personage because he becomes ‘not real’ in playing his role on the stage. All this brings to the understanding of artwork as irreality.

Abstract

Appreciating a work of art, particularly in theater performances, often leaves humans overwhelmed with indescribable emotions. This is due to the role of empathy within human beings that relates to what is seen on stage. In theoretical studies, art can be enjoyed through phenomenological aspects and more empirical approaches. One of them is through the lens of neuroaesthetics. This article employs a qualitative descriptive approach using the ChatGPT AI. The conclusion is that the relationship between aesthetic experiences and brain function ultimately reinforces each other.
