Abstract

This study aims to find out what kind of life is portrayed in the advertisement and how Apple products help people to cope with that life portrayed in the advertisement. This study analyzes Apple advertisement video entitled The Whole Working From Home Thing. This study uses multimodal theory from Paltridge (2012), semiotic mode from Chia & Chan (2017), Mercado (2011), Eiseman (2017), Ekman & Friesen (2003), and Pease (2004). The data analysis uses a qualitative method. The analysis reveals that Apple has successfully created the video that could portray the hectic situation people felt when they could only do their activities inside their home during COVID-19 pandemic. While being busy with their lifestyle, they use Apple products by utilizing its features to help them. Furthermore, this study opens new possibilities for other researchers to apply the same theory that has been used in this thesis to analyze film and video with different topics.

Abstract

This research examined Hermanto Tanoko's politeness while asking questions and using address terms to Tahir and Jehian Panangian Sijabat on his podcast. The writer also compared Hermanto Tanoko's  politeness to Jehian Panangian Sijabat and Tahir to find the similarities and differences. This research cites Watts (2003) for the politeness theory. Since politeness is cultural, the writer employed notions from Javanese culture by Suseno (2001). This qualitative research analyzed utterances made by Hermanto Tanoko. Hermanto Tanoko shows hormat (respect) by utilizing personal name, family term, or a combination of family term and personal name to address older people and using personal names to address younger people. Hermanto Tanoko used rukun (harmonious) while asking questions by hedging, being indirect, displaying attention or compassion, and joking. Despite their age gap, Hermanto Tanoko is polite to both guests which might happened due to the fact that Hermanto Tanoko is raised in the Indonesian (Javanese) culture.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of impoliteness strategies and the similarities and differences of the impoliteness strategies used by the Baroness, an antagonistic character with an impressive background, toward Estella and Cruella in the movie Cruella. The theoretical framework used is Culpeper’s (1996, 2005) and Bousfield’s (2008) impoliteness strategy. This study employed a qualitative approach. The writers collected and analyzed the Baroness’ utterances to her subordinate, Estella, and to her business rival, Cruella, during the business scenes. The Baroness used all six types of impoliteness strategies to Estella, namely: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm/mock politeness, withhold politeness, and off-record impoliteness. On the contrary, the Baroness only used four out of six types of impoliteness strategies to Cruella, specifically excluding: negative impoliteness and withhold politeness. The Baroness’ background and personality, as well as the interlocutor’s own background, might have influenced the findings of the study.
