Abstract

The potency of oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) fibers as one of the by-products of processing oil palm is increasing significantly so that proper management is needed in reducing environmental impact. One of the utilization of OPEFB fibers is as a substitution material in construction which usually the material is derived from non-renewable mining materials so that the number is increasingly limited. Therefore, it is necessary to study to know the performance of OPEFB fiber in making construction products especially concrete. In this case, the experiment was conducted using experimental method with variation of fiber addition by 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. Each specimen was tested by weight, slump value, compressive strength, tensile strength, elasticity and crack length. As the results, the variation of fibers addition by 10%, decrease of slump value is 7%, concrete weight is 3% and crack length is 8% while increase of the compressive strength is 2.7% and the modulus of elasticity is 33.3% but its tensile strength decreased insignificantly by 0.05% . Furthermore, the addition of fibers above 10% to 30% decreased compressive strength is still below 10% and tensile strength below 2% while the weight of concrete, slump value and crack length decreased. Therefore, the addition of 10% can replace the performance of concrete without fiber but the addition of above 10% can still be used on non-structural concrete.

Abstract

Oil palm plantations on tidal swamp land are increasing with the potential of land reach 20.1 million hectares due to unavailable mineral land which can be used. The limitation of optimal land for oil palm in Indonesia is currently a factor that encourages the use of sub-optimal land, one of which is tidal land. The use of tidal land has certain constraints such as soil acidity, low soil fertility, poor soil drainage conditions, lack of water and increased pyrite oxidation during dry periods which have a negative impact on oil palm growth and productivity. This preliminary study examines the effects of existing water governance to get the right solution and can be applied in the future. Modeling on HEC-RAS 4.1 software produces a simulation of the physical phenomena of channels in the land. The overall results show that the condition of the water governance system in the observation block is not optimal so that the inundated areas range from 65% due to the lack of good water management systems such as the drainage of the canals, the lack of water buildings and even the sluices so that in an uncontrolled area. This obstacle can be overcome by improving water management, such as canal washing, construction of water buildings, including culverts, bridges, crop harvesting, stoplogs and sluice gates. Water management system plays an important role in controlling water in the garden area so that in the rainy season, water can be channeled to outlets and in the dry season, water can survive in the garden area. This study is expected to be a reference in improving the water management system in that location.

Abstract

The Color and appearance are the most important indicators for a farmer to determine the condition of oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFB) in the harvesting process. As the main attributes, the color and appearance become the guidelines for the initial assessment of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) of oil palm condition that is suitable or not for harvesting. In Facts, the FFB assessment activities are still carried out manually by utilizing the farmers visual, which is it will be prone to errors during the assessment. Due to this problem, it is important to automate the assessment of the color characteristics of oil palm FFB in order to minimize errors by farmers. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of RGB color imaging techniques on oil palm FFB. The method used is processing and color analysis on 30 FFB images based on smartphone cameras to find the correlations for each color. Each color channel R, G and B in the FFB images was extracted and converted into grayscale using MATLAB R2021 software. The results show that the correlation value of R channel and grayscale has the highest value with R2 = 0.9569. This correlation is expected to be an initial study and suitable alternative for automating the assessment of the condition of oil palm FFB.
