Abstract

Religion wherever it is, always being replaced in high state of human life. Religion, as the source of all sources, is used as a tool to role human either vertically or horizontally. Karl Marx said that religion is a blessed heart against a cold and heartless world. Religion is a human medium to have more sympathy and empathy for others to live a warmer and friendlier life in peace. However, it cannot be denied that religion was once a sword used to commit genocide or mass annihilation by a group of humans against other human groups either directly or indirectly. Crusades, the middle-east war that is still going on are two examples of the dark events of human destruction wrapped by religion. Terrorism that occurs today is a deviation that is also wrapped by religion. These crimes are the result of a distortion of religious doctrine. Not only are physical destructive but also psychological and materialistic crimes. Cases of misappropriation of funds like the First Travel case are one of them. This paper will attempt to explore the phenomenon of crime in the name of Islam that happened lately in Indonesia. This paper will explore the phenomenon with a philosophical and social approach.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the mechanisms sustaining the Maulid tradition by examining the relationship among religious practice, social solidarity, the production of meaning, the negotiation of Malay-Islamic identity, and adaptation to social change. The study employs a qualitative approach with a field research design. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, with informants selected purposively from religious leaders, customary or community leaders, activity organizers, younger people, and community members involved in Maulid celebrations. The data were analyzed through organization, thematic grouping, comparison, and interpretation of field findings. The results show that Maulid functions as a socio-religious arena that brings religious practices into interaction with local tradition while strengthening solidarity through Barzanji and salawat recitation, nganggung , communal meals, and mutual cooperation. Maulid also becomes a space for the production of symbolic meaning and the negotiation of Malay-Islamic identity, particularly as younger generations encounter increasingly diverse sources of religious knowledge and social change. Digital technology does not simply weaken tradition; it also serves as a medium for communication, documentation, and youth participation. The study finds that the continuity of Maulid operates through a mechanism of continuity through negotiation, namely the community's capacity to maintain the core values and functions of tradition while reinterpreting meanings, negotiating identity, adjusting forms of practice, and adapting to social change. These findings demonstrate that the continuity of tradition is determined not by the immutability of ritual forms, but by the community's capacity to maintain the relevance of tradition in changing contexts.
