Abstract

Acute gastroenteritis in neonates is more complicated than infantile gastroenteritis and the mortality rate is high especially in diarrhoeal outbreaks due to enteropathogenic escherichia coli (EPEC) infections. This study evaluated the epidemiological, clinical, bacteriological aspects and the mortality rate in relation to high risk infants. The incidence of diarhoeal diseases during a three year period (1975 -1977) was 4% ( 337 out of 8594 infants), specified as follows: -In 1975: 5.4% ( 160 out of 2967infants) - In 1976 : 3.6% ( 94 out of 2640 infants) - In 1977 : 3.1% ( 83 out of 2640 infants) Diarhoeal diseases most frequently occured in high risk infants, especially in low birth weights, neonatal asphyxia and pathologic labour. The high incidence of pathogenic bacteria was due to EPEC namely 32.2% (92 out of285 stool cultures).

Abstract

The risk factors of low birthweight infants were assessed in a retrospective study covering 3607 singleton livebirth infants at Manado Hospital from January until December 1993. The analysis confirmed that patterns of risk birthweight hypertension in pregnancy (P<0.01), maternal education (P<0.01), maternal age (P<0.05), and parity (P<0.01), marital status (P<0.01), history of abortion (P<0.05), and parity (P<0.01). Anemia in pregnancy was also associated with birthweight in low birth weight (P<0.05). Asymetric intrauterine growth retardation (Ponderal Index below 2.32) was found both in premature and term infants.

Abstract

During a 2-year-period (1988-1990) 31 patients with tetanus neonatorum were recruited for this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: The first group (15 patients) was treated with ATS injection, oral metronidazole and amoxycillin, and diazepam suppositoria. The second group (16 patients) was treated with the same regimen, as the first group plus pyridoxin injection 100 mg on the first day followed by 25 mg orally on the next days. There was no statistical difference in the two groups concerning the gestation period, sex, severity of the disease (p> 0.05), place of delivery (all at home) and mode of delivery delivered by traditional (midwife/dukun). The mortality of the first group (without pyridoxin) was 60% and the second (with pyridoxin) 37.5% (p < 0.05).
