Abstract

This article discusses a review book of al-Muwattâ’ titled Tafsîr Gharîb al-Muwattâ’ by Abû Marwân ‘Abd al-Mâlik bin Habîb, an Andalusian Mâliki scholar who lived in the range 174-238 H. The discussion includes the author figure, the status of the book and the contents, systematics as well as the method. The reception of this book will also be discussed at the end of the writing. This book explains gharîb or abstruse words in al-Muwattâ’ both in a language and a fiqh explanation. Abû Marwân,  has placed the scope of gharîb al-hadîth broader than usual. Unlike the other essay of Abû Marwân, al-Wadihah, Tafsîr Gharîb al-Muwattâ’ did not receive a positive response, because the contribution of this book is not too significant, other than because of carelessness in narration. Abû Marwân not only saw this gharîb from the linguistic aspect, but also from the fiqh aspect, so that it was not always the words described in gharîb language, but words or sentences that did need further explanation fiqh, even though the word is actually not gharîb linguistically. The advantage of this book lies in its method of being able to present a book that is practical, easy to understand and applicable, not long-winded.Keyword: Tafsîr, Gharîb, al-Muwattâ’, ‘Abd al-Mâlik bin Habîb
A Muslim Reading of the Haustafeln of Ephesians 5:21-33 in Dialogue with Quran 4:34: Does the Text Support a Hierarchical Relation between Husbands and Wives? Lien Iffah Naf’atu Fina

Abstract

The essay questions whether Ephesians 5:21-33 supports a hierarchical relation between husbands and wives as an ideal and universal principle. To answer the question, as a Muslim, I share my reading of this passage in dialogue with a similar Qur’anic passage, Q. 4:34. I learn that the two texts have undergone similar history since its emergence until today. Through a contextual reading, I view that even though Ephesians 5:21-33, as well as Q. 4:34, adopted the household concept accepted in the area, which was patriarchal, the author instilled a new higher equal relationship between husbands and wives. In short, this text proposes “an intended transformation” or an “imaginative vision.” Offering a new reading of gender-related texts is a shared struggle in both traditions. It is an important endeavor to make the scriptures speak for today’s world as a powerful basis for social transformation.

Abstract

This paper attempts to provide a balanced and comprehensive reading of al-Būnī, who is mainly known as a scholar of Islamic magic, instead of a Sufi. This is because his name and works are widely known and referred in the Islamic world even into the present, including in Indonesia. To accomplish this agenda, this paper examines al-Būnī’s ideas on the science of letters across his works in order to determine how they are rooted in the principles of Islamic spiritualy. From the examination of al-Būnī’s science of letters, it can be seen that Islamic spirituality underlies his works: in the centrality of God and in sober Sufi devotions such as dhikr and fasting, as the complement of the magical materials. Furthermore, while he was a respectable Sufi at that time, he also wrote books in which he explored the Arabic letters primarily from an Islamic spirituality approach. By combining magical practice and Islamic spirituality, al-Būnī provided practical Sufism for the masses. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20414/ujis.v20i2.814

Abstract

This article examines Western scholar thoughts on methods of Qur’anic exegesis. It specifically analyzes Angelika Neuwirth’s thoughts as one of the leading western scholars on the Qur’an. She is considered the pioneer of academic-dialogic approaches to the Qur’an. She offers reading the Qur’an from the period of pre-canonization to conceive of the ways in which the Qur’an in the time of its revelation interacted with its surroundings. To understand this, she looks at relevant united verses as an integral unit that keeps important processes of communication during the lifetime of the Prophet. She concludes that these types of the verses are represented by the Meccan verses, not all verses of the Qur’an. Her study provides a new path in contemporary Qur’anic studies especially in the efforts to “revive” the codified Qur’an.
Southeast Asian Islamic Art and Architecture: Re-Examining The Claim of the Unity and Universality of Islamic Art Lien Iffah Naf’atu Fina

Abstract

This paper re-examines the claim of unity and universality of Islamic art, whose discussion usually disregards Islamic art and architecture in the Southeast Asian context. The question raised is where Islamic art in the Malay world should be put before the claim of the unity and universality of Islamic art and whether this claim is, thus, still valid. To meet this objective, the two heritages of Javanese Islamic art, Demak and Cirebon mosques and wayang, are presented and analyzed before such universal claim and pre-Islamic Javanese art. These Javanese expressions have unique features compared to those from the older Muslim world. The mosques lack geometric ornamentation and Qur’anic calligraphic decoration, and are rich with symbolism. However, both the mosques and wayang also clearly express the figurative designs. Thus, this paper argues that instead of geometric designs as the unified character of Islamic art as some argue, it should be the abstraction of motifs. This way, the universal claim of Islamic art accommodates the artistic expressions from the wider regions, including those from Southeast Asia. Besides the abstraction, these Javanese artistic expressions also shares other universal character of traditional development of Islamic art; its ability to always considering the local tradition while maintaining the basic principle of Islamic art. Javanese Islamic art is both Islamic and uniquely Javanese. In the midst of globalization and the contemporary tendency towards “Islamic authentication” by importing culture and tradition from the Middle East, including the mosque architecture, the latter character is vital. It tells that any direct import and implantation of other or foreign traditions to a certain region without any process of considering the local tradition and context has no basis and legitimation in Islamic artistic tradition.

Abstract

Abdullah Saeed is one of contemporary Muslim thinkers sought to offer an idea to reinterpret al-Qur’an. His offering starts from the rising of the textual interpretation phenomenon. This article tries to discuss Saeed’s offering in interpreting al-Qur’an called a contextual interpretation. This serves as an act to interpret al-Qur’an through considering al-Qur’an context when it was revealed as well as its contemporary context. The focus of Saeed’s interpetation is the ethic-legal verses which become the frequent ‘source of problem’ when Islam faces modernity. To support his interpretation’s idea, Saeed maintains some arguments on the benefit of reinterpretating al-Qur’an. This article views that Saeed’s contextual interpretation served as the continuation and improvement of Fazlur Rahman’ s double-movement. Saeed’s great contribution to Rahman is through a more clear and concise framework of its interpretation particularly on the theory of values hierarchy.
Ibn ‘Arabī, Fiqh, and a Literal Reading of the Qur’an: Approaching the Outward Divine Commands as a Spiritual Realization Lien Iffah Naf'atu Fina

Abstract

Ibn ‘Arabī is sometimes regarded as unorthodox, refusing the outward aspects of religion. In fact, Ibn ‘Arabī writes hundreds of pages on the topics of fiqh and is a serious proponent of Sharī’ah as the only way to gain the divine Truth or spiritual realization. He proposes to read the text literally (spiritual literalism). This paper discusses fiqh and an approach of reading Qur’anic commands from a spiritual perspective through his lens. Ibn ‘Arabī believes that each ḥukm has both its outer and inner or spiritual dimensions, which is uncovered through a literal reading. He criticizes the use of ra’y and qiyas as a method of legal reasoning. His spiritual approach results in a democratization of ijtihād and authority. While this paper discusses its application of this approach to verses on ‘ibādāt, as mainly conducted by Ibn ‘Arabī himself in the Futūḥāt, it also touches on how this approach be applied and useful in the modern context.[Ibn ‘Arabī terkadang dianggap menolak aspek luar agama.

Abstract

The Qur'an and the Bible have some similarities. These similarities have invited many scholars to conduct comparative studies on these two scriptures. This paper focuses on the comparative study of the history of these two scriptures among the Western scholars. It is through this article, the very signifcant shifting in the outlook of Western scholars on the relationship of the Koran and the Bible will be seen clearly, from a negative perspective of the Koran to a positive appreciation one. The shifting was made possible by the birth of inter-textuality discipline in social and humanity studies which look that every text is unique and thus cannot be compared (incommensurable).
