Abstract

In the past few years, South Korean pop culture has become a global phenomenon. The sudden popularity of the culture commonly known as as Korean Wave or Hallyu. This trend includes Korean drama, dance, music, films, animation, games, and fans club for Korean pop celebrity. In the past, those who become fans is only from a spesific age, but now it is more varied. One of most popular of the Korean singer groups is BangTan Boys. Abbreviated as BTS, the fans of BangTan Boys is proudly call themselves, “ARMY”. Using the Henry Jenkins’s Participatory culture theory along with qualitative method, this research tries to analyze that there are audiens who do not only consuming pop culture, but also producing new cultural artefacts from that. The data were collected by focus group discussion, in-depth interview and data analysis. It shows that some of the fans are making “fanfiction” as the reproductions of new artefacts, despite actively participating in BTS fandom by doing activities as include in the four types of Jenkin’s participatory cultures.

Abstract

As new media emerge and replace the popularity of conventional media, people use social media not only as medium to socialize, but also increase its role as news source or news outlet. A generational divide has always existed within news. The older people tend to choose TV and newspaper as their primary news source meanwhile research conducted by Reuters in 2015 showed that younger audiences that grown up in digital era, exhibiting very different behaviors and increasingly expect the news to come to them through online channels and in new formats. This makes social media become the opportunities and also threats to some news companies. What should the media do in order to survive? Does the generation gap influence the media to use both traditional and digital or social media? Some online media even put their headlines and link in Facebook and Twitter as news outlet, so people can just click the link and go to their websites. Methodology used in this research is qualitative with data gathered from focus group discussion and interview. The result of the study expected to show how the generation gap creates different media consumption and the need for news corporation to change their pattern in order to survive. Abstract

On October 2021, Kim Seon Ho was on peak of his career when faced a wave of backlash after an anonymous post circulated in online communities saying that an unnamed actor “manipulated her into getting an abortion under false pretenses” and being cancelled. Researchers will use a case study of a Kim Seon Ho from South Korea who has been subjected to cancel culture in order to examine the complexity of this social phenomenon. This research tries to understand the cancel culture phenomenon that is not only happened in South Korea, but also USA, or other countries. Using FGD and also literature for data collection, this study explores how the responses from the participants’ expected to give meaning about regarding cancel culture. The result is some of participants agree with the cancel culture to be implemented, and some of them disagree. The conclusion is cancel culture can be a good thing when we want to make those who can be role model are those with positive attitudes. But on the other hand, cancel culture can be a bad thing when we place celebrity as a material commodity and get cancelled easily.
