Abstract

This article is about the implementation of how the lecturer can contribute as an agent of transferring culture and knowledge in preparing the students to face the Industrial Revolution 4.0 by doing the Character Education to the students of Mechanical Engineering in learning English for Engineering Students. This study is done in faculty of Engineering in the University of Darma Agung, Medan. It is a qualitative research and used documentation and questioner technique in collecting the data needed. The lecturer implements character education by being a role model, building a targeted behavior culture, giving punishment and appraisal and using the appropriate teaching materials and method based on the needs of the students and the targeted workplace.

Abstract

Sejak banyaknya penelitian yang menemukan bahwa umpan balik korektif dosen memberikan kontribusi yang tinggi terhadap perkembangan kemampuan berbicara, maka penelitian yang berhubungan dengan hal ini pun semakin berkembang namun masih terfokus kepada implementaasi umpan balik korektif dan jenis-jenis umpan balik korektif yang digunakan oleh pengajar dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan bagaimana persepsi mahasiswa terhadap umpan balik korektif dosen yang diberikan pada mata kuliah speaking. Dengan menggunakan metode pemberian kuesioner kepada 44 mahasiswa dan wawancara kepada 22 mahasiswa, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap keberadaan umpan balik korektif dosen karena hal tersebut menolong mereka mengetahui kesalahan yang mereka lakukan, mengetahui langkah perbaikan yang akhirnya meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa, memberi dampak untuk semakin berani berbicara dan meningkatkan keaktifan mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran speaking. Jenis umpan balik korektif yang paling sering digunakan oleh dosen adalah elicitation dan hal ini berbeda dengan jenis umpan balik yang disukai oleh mahasiswa, yakni explicit correction. Mahasiswa lebih memilih explicit correction karena mahasiswa dapat mengetahui secara langsung apa yang menjadi kesalahan mereka bersamaan dengan jawaban yang benar. Mahasiswa paling tidak menyukai jenis metalinguistic clue karena penggunaan jeni umpan balik ini mengakibatkan kebingungan bagi mahasiswa untuk menemukan kesalahan mereka sendiri karena diakibatkan oleh pengetahuan mereka mengenai komponen-komponen berbicara bahasa Inggris yang belum memadai.

Abstract

Teaching materials that meet the students need must be gained from deep analysis of student’s needs that can involve not only the students but also lecturer, staff workers from students’ preferred workplace. It should cover the topics needed, relevant tasks, answering the students’ lacks, and touch the most priority of English language skill needed. Need analysis found is needed to design content and aims of the course which are oriented to the specific needs of the learners. This research revealed that The background of English of the students are not good and the students learned the general English not mostly specific for the Mechanical engineering students; connecting word to word or sentence to sentence (33%), vocabularies (21%), grammar (22%), Pronunciation (9%), Finding the main topic (9%), and others (6%) are their most difficulties ; The Genre Based Vocabularies and topics of the teaching materials which are suitable are as follows: The Core of Greetings, The Core of Introducing Oneself, the core of Company Profile and workplace, The Core of Reporting or Making Report, The Core of Giving and Asking Information, The Core of Asking and Giving Direction, The Core of Statistics, The Core of Interview, The Core of Job Application, The Core of Delivering a Presentation, The Core of Writing Letters, The Core of Explaining Process, The Core of Telephone Calls. It is also revealed that the students are needed to be taught in a learning atmosphere that encourages them to be more active in learning in the classroom with their low competencies and low motivation and still need the lecturer explanation and help at first followed by learning English in autonomous way. Teaching materials mechanical engineering need analysis ESP.

Abstract

Studying English for at least seven years does not necessarily make students proficient in practicing English language learned include speaking. When the ability to use English orally has become one of the factors to get a good knowledge, economic independence and job security, it is deemed necessary to find out what problems are the students have to speaking English in order to build strategies to overcome the problems to students' speaking ability in the future. Thirty persons from second semester students of English department at University of Darma agung Medan participated in this study. The data regarding students’ English speaking were collected through questionnaire and speaking test. This study found that students experienced problems to speaking English. It was also revealed that the major problems of the students to speaking English due to the lack of effective transition of knowledge into practice which is caused by the lack of English basic knowledge and the influence of first language used, the disadvantaged socioeconomic factor, non-English classroom instructions, and English speaking anxiety.
