Abstract

One of the learning models offered to overcome writing difficulties is a learning media based on local wisdom. Local wisdom is basic knowledge obtained from everyday life. This model will make students interested and like writing activities because it was close to their daily life. Social function or communicative approach of descriptive text is to describe a particular person, place, or thing in detail or clearly. This research was conducted through Classroom Action Research. Classroom Action research is about working towards practical outcomes, and also about creating new forms of understanding. In this research, learning media based on local wisdom has a good impact on improving students' ability to write descriptive texts, including that students can understand several local cultures that are close to their lives so that they can preserve the culture more broadly. This English learning media based on local wisdom can be the effective technique and it could be used as the alternative way in teaching writing because the technique was easy to be implemented and it was the one of interesting technique which very closed to the students’ learning activities

Abstract

Abstract: The research was carried out due to students having low ability in writing. The research aims are to describe students' ability in writing recount text and students' errors in using language features in writing recount text. This research used qualitative research. Data were collected using documentation techniques. Data collection tools are documents. The average of students' ability in content aspect is 35%, organization aspect is 23%, vocabulary aspect is 17%, grammar aspect is 20% and mechanic's aspect is 5%. The number of students' errors in writing recount text is 79 items. The omission error was 35 (44%), addition error was 13 (17%), misformation was 23 (29%) and misordering was 8 (10%). It was concluded the most mastered ability of students in writing recount text was content aspect and the lowest was in mechanic's aspect. The type of students' errors using language features was omission and the lowest in misordering.

Abstract

Abstract: This research focused on solving the students’ difficulties in understanding the meaning and finding information from a text. The objective of this research was to recognize the improvement of the student’s participation and the student reading performance in teaching reading comprehension through REAP technique. The research design used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data was collected using; observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. The findings showed there was an improvement in student’s ability to comprehend a reading text. The student’s involvement in teaching and learning activities improved as well. Most of the students gave a positive response to the teaching-learning process. It could be concluded that the REAP technique was useful to be used in teaching and learning reading comprehension at one state senior high school. The students became active and began to think critically. REAP technique can be an alternative as a teaching medium specifically for reading comprehension. Keywords: Reap Technique, Reading comprehension, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu mata pelajaran wajib yang ditempuh oleh siswa di Sekolah Menengah Pertama, Sekolah Menengah Atas, Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan dan sederajat. Sebagai salah satu mata pelajaran wajib, maka siswa diharapkan dapat menguasai materi pelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang disampaikan di sekolah. Selain itu, sejak ditetapkan sebagai salah satu pelajaran wajib bagi pelajar di Indonesia. Saat ini Bahasa Inggris berada pada urutan pertama diantara beberapa bahasa lainnya yang paling banyak digunakan di dunia. Bahasa Inggris dituturkan oleh sekitar 1,13 Milyar penduduk dunia dan ada sekitar 60 negara yang menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Nasional atau Bahasa Resmi. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, pemerintah telah menetapkan Bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran wajib di sekolah formal di Indonesia. Sehingga perlu dilakukan berbagai hal untuk menunjang pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di sekolah-sekolah bahkan di luar lingkungan pendidikan formal. Hal ini untuk membantu peserta didik memiliki motivasi dan minat dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Salah satu yang dapat dilakukan adalah menggunakan Index Card Game. Berdasarkan hasil studi pustaka dan observasi yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdi. Selanjutnya tim pengabdi akan melaksanakan peningkatan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa yang tinggal di Asrama St. Yohanes Gabriel Perboyre yang berlokasi di Kilometer 4 Nanga Pinoh, Kabupaten Melawi.
