Abstract

This study aims to find out whether the Spelling Bee Game can improve students' vocabulary mastery. This study used a pre-experimental design. The variables of this research are the Spelling Bee game as the independent variable and the students' vocabulary as the dependent variable. The samples of this research were students of class VIIA and VIIB of SMP Negeri 3 Pagimana, totaling forty-four students. The sampling technique is purposive sampling, which means the sample is selected with a specific purpose. This study uses a test as the main instrument which is divided into pre-test and post-test. Analysis of the data in this study using statistical calculations. The results of this study, the mean value of the pre-test is 34.5, while the post-test is 62.2 and the hypothesis test, the t-counted value is 17.07,

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi dengan hadirnya pandemi Covid-19 di negara Indonesia yang mempengaruhi seluruh aspek kehidupan masyarakatnya, termasuk ragam bahasa yang digunakan. Begitu banyak istilah asing yang muncul di tengah-tengah masyarakat terkait covid-19. Hal ini menyebabkan meningkatnya penggunaan code-mixing (campur kode) antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa asing (bahasa Inggris) di dalam percakapan masyarakat kota Luwuk Kabupaten Banggai. Mengingat masyarakat kota Luwuk merupakan masyarakat multilingual yang sering menggabungkan dua bahasa bahkan lebih dalam berkomunikasi. Pada penelitian ini peneliti fokus pada analisis code-mixing didalam percakapan yang terjadi pada masyarakat kota Luwuk Kabupaten Banggai di masa pandemi Covid-19. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis code-mixing yang digunakan, jenis code-mixing yang paling dominan digunakan, serta faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya code-mixing didalam percakapan masyarakat kota Luwuk. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Adapun metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah (1) observasi yakni berupa pengamatan terhadap hasil percakapan berupa rekaman mapun catatan. dan (2) wawancara. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa terdapat tiga jenis code-mixing yang terjadi di dalam percakapan masyarakat kota luwuk yakni intra-sentential code-mixing, intra-lexical code-mixing, dan perubahan pengucapan. Dari tiga jenis code-mixing tersebut, jenis intra-sentential merupakan jenis yang paling dominan. Selain itu diperoleh pula factor yang mempengaruhi terjadinya proses code-mixing di dalam percakapan, yakni factor non kebahasan yang meliputi social value & perkenalan budaya baru, serta faktor kebahasaan yang meliputi keterbatasan penggunaan kode, penggunaan istilah yang lebih popular, pembicara & pribadi pembicara, mitra bicara, topic pembicaraan, fungsi dan tujuan, serta untuk membangkitkan rasa humor.

Abstract

Speaking is one of English skill that has been learnt from junior high school until higher education. It means that students in higher education should have good capability in doing speaking in all contexts, include in daily conversation context. For this reason, this study was designed to determine the extent to which students' ability in speaking especially in daily conversation context. This study took 22 students in Educational Faculty of Tompotika Luwuk University as the participants. Descriptive qualitative is a method that chosen in this study. The data have been collected from observation and documentation. Observation and documentation collected when the students doing conversation. The result of this study shows that the students’ speaking ability in daily conversation context can be categorized into “poor”. It was proven by the students who got only 18,18% in good category, 22,72% in average category, 40,92% in poor category, and 18,2% in very poor category. Finally, it can be conclude that the students’ speaking ability in daily conversation context at higher education of Educational Faculty of Tompotika Luwuk University categorized into poor.
