Abstract

Topeng Sidakarya dance is a masked wali dance originated from the 16th century. A typical old art performance that utilises a mask to express the figure's character. It is believed the art was choreographed after a brief visit of Brahmana Keling, a sage from eastern Java to Bali at the time King Dalem Waturenggong was reigning Gelgel Kingdom. The tour of Brahmana keling to the grand ritual held in the 16th century by king Dalem Waturenggong gave birth to Topeng Sidakarya dance; An art to dedicate Brahmana Keling’s service for Gelgel kingdom. His service had led Bali to reach its prosperous time for an extended period. The dance is recognised by its unique mask characteristics: a white-based colour mask, squinting eyes, black or white moustache, smiling expression and exaggerated overbite teeth. Topeng Sidakarya dance served as a complement of religious rituals based on king Dalem Waturenggong’s decree for the future generation. It is compulsory to perform the sacred art as it carries a symbol that the ceremony has been well-acted, and the organiser would meet their expectation for the ritual.

Abstract

Saraswati Day is a day to commemorate the descent of knowledge as a source of human intelligence. According to the Balinese calendar, Balinese people celebrate the day on Saniscara (Saturday) Wuku Watugunung, which falls every 210 days of the Balinese calendar or every six months according to the solar calendar. The high potential of public enthusiasm to commemorate Saraswati and Banyu Pinaruh days cannot be separated from the previous celebrations, which were always held in festive. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, these two days were crowded with activities from students and educators on Saraswati Day, then continued with the melukat ritual by the Balinese Hindu community at various water sources and holy places the next day in Banyu Pinaruh. The drastic shift in situation, If it is interpreted according to the purpose of Saraswati’s day itself, namely to gain wisdom, as the essence of knowledge, then the pandemic situation can be viewed as a new challenge in humankind. From the COVID-19 pandemic, humans are expected to be adaptive to their environment for the sake of mutual prosperity. Therefore, the obtained knowledge about everything that exists in this world would give a significant meaning. It would not be only a knowledge written in a book, learned, and stays on people’s heads. Nevertheless, it has become an applied science that is practiced and provides significant benefits for humankind.

Abstract

Tukad Unda is a volcanic-formed river with areas for drainage and deposition of lava material resulting from volcanic eruptions. The area covers the Karangasem Regency in the upstream and Klungkung Regency in the downstream parts. In the Balinese language, Tukad means river, and Unda means terraced. Hence, Tukad Unda means terraced river. The obvious point is that Tukad Unda flows through a dam with two overlapping terraces. Thus, the flowing water forms a level resembling a mini waterfall. The place is one of a kind for those who enjoy calm and breezy nature. Besides having clear water with schools of small fish, the area is also surrounded by soothing trees. Tourists can either stop by the available restaurants or play in the water. The water barrage of Tukad Unda has become a tourist destination that attracted much attention from visitors in recent years. Its serene, lush natural atmosphere, gurgling water, and a curtain waterfall on the dam wall showcase a relieving experience in downtown Klungkung. Tourists can now comfortably visit the Tukad Unda dam area since the local village has managed the area as a complete tourist destination with various supporting facilities. However, Tukad Unda is a river prone to mud flooding, especially when Mount Agung experiences increased volcanic activity. Thus, the central and local governments focus on developing supporting facilities to strengthen the Tukad Unda utilization. In addition, many studies show the potential of the Tukad Unda, along with its watershed, which, when properly developed and managed, can significantly impact the welfare of the surrounding community.
