Abstract

In Vocational High School, the students mostly learn vocabulary from a general course book. However, the entire vocabulary that they learn is not related with the vocabulary that they will use in their future work field. The research aimed to find out the target needs, to describe the learning needs, and to develop an appropriate English vocabulary booklet for the students of the Motorcycle Engineering Study Program of SMK KH.Ghalib Pringsewu. The research is categorized as Research and Development (R&D) research design. A need analysis questionnaire is distributed to the students. Based on the result, 80% of the students need support for their future job including the need for learning English vocabulary to access the information correlates with their work. Meanwhile, 70% of students having lacks or difficulties in learning English materials such as in memorizing, expressing sentences, and reading the text because they do not understand the meaning of the word. Moreover, 76% of students want to learn English appropriate with their major equipped with media like a worksheet, used LCD, and the pictures with its meaning. The product designed consists of three small unit in the form of booklet including materials and exercises. After the writer draft of the materials was developed; the materials were then evaluated by experts’ judgment. Based on materials evaluation the main score of all aspects of developed materials was 3.35 which is categorized as “Very Good”.

Abstract

TOEFL is a need for college students to continue their study at a well-known university and need to acquire a bachelor's degree. However, COVID-19 led to a primary catastrophe that hit most countries in the world. The implementation of social distancing or distance restrictions imposed by the government has made training and learning carried out, one of which is the usage of an internet interface software solution. This study aims to determine students' perceptions of the application of Zoom-based TOEFL training. Descriptive research by giving online-interview to 44 students who took part in the TOEFL training organized by Language Institute of Business Economics Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Pringsewu. The positive perception of this Zoom-based TOEFL training is the flexibility, the students can manage to do different activities whilst still join in it. The negative perceptions or weaknesses are the ineffective training time, the network disruption, and the different way in explanation.

Abstract

Students have difficulty in understanding Mathematical concepts because the instructional media are difficult to understand. It is necessary to have instructional media that is attractive, comprehensive and supports online learning. Bandicam software offers a chance for teachers to create an interesting instructional video that supports online learning.  Based on the aim, Research and Development (R&D) with a 4-D development is used. The sample was the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Ambarawa that learned about Set Material.  The results showed that instructional video using Bandicam software was identified as feasible as an online instructional media. The results of the expert's assessment found that the average score from the set material expert was 82.33%, and from the media, the expert was 85.09%. The results of the trial stated that the students’ average using the instructional video was 82.61%. Based on the expert and student's assessment, it can be concluded that instructional video using Bandicam software is suitable as an online instructional media.

Abstract

The process of using ESP (English for Specific Purposes) to learn English in universities usually does not achieve the best results. One of the contributing factors is the lack of learning programs that are not related to the scientific field they are engaged in. Therefore, it is necessary to formulate a study plan, first analyzing the needs of students to learn English with specific objectives. Therefore, this study aims to find and describe the needs of ESP English learners. This must be done so that the learning of English received is by the scientific field he masters and the field of work he will be involved in. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The purpose of this study was to determine the need for learning English for the Management study program. The data collection technique used is a questionnaire survey. The data obtained are then classified to identify and describe the needs of students to learn English. The results of this study will be used as a reference for further research, namely syllabus planning and development of ESP English books or teaching materials.

Abstract

This research aims to describe, explain and analyze the struggles and strategies faced by Vocational High School during the Covid-19 in Vocational High School Pringsewu. The subject in this study was an English teacher of Vocational High School Pringsewu. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Observation, interviews, and questionnaires were used for collecting data. The results of this study indicate that teachers applied online teaching techniques to meet the requirement of teaching English in both practice and theory based on the syllabus. During the implementation, teachers experienced limited ability in explaining material to students, not all students understood the material presented by the teacher. The teacher did not know the students' abilities and characters. The strategies used by teachers in online learning have not been maximal and effective.
