Abstract

Evaluation and critics are two essential aspects in assessing a perfect performance. Public speaking is a platform to convey critics as well as evaluations publicly. Critics and Evaluation is an embodiment of check and balance in a democratic nation. Barack Obama attends White House Association Correspondents Dinner annually as a sign of USA democracy establishment. This event is a mark of good relationship between government and mass media correspondents. This study finds critical and evaluative humorous utterances as Obama’s tactical strategy to deliver his critics and evaluation. This research is qualitative research that uses conversational analysis (CA) as the method. The data were transcribed by Jefferson transcription system (2020). It has an aim to examine implicature theory (Grice, 1975) further in humour. This study shows that pragmatical utterances, that is conveyed in humorous concept, need a construction of common understanding, named as common ground. Turn taking is seen from speaker’s speech and various responses of audiences such as laughter, applauses, or short verbal responses. These responses become essential part of discourse constructions in seizing its goal, to criticize and evaluate colleagues’ performance.

Abstract

The ease of access to information, communication and transportation provides a golden opportunity for the development of the Indonesian language. As a member of the MEA and G20, as well as the country with the fourth largest population in the world, Indonesian has the potential to be seen by the world economically as a very strategic language. However, the development of information and communication technology, as well as the ease of mobility, have made it easier for Indonesians to get exposed to foreign languages. This has resulted in many language activists worried that Indonesian will be eroded by foreign languages ??such as English. Due to the problem, this study was conducted to identify the extent to which the application of Indonesian in accordance with KBBI, PUPI and PUEBI was implemented, particularly in the daily economic activities of local residents. This study was conducted using linguistic landscape techniques and was carried out in the Southeast Pontianak sub-district, Pontianak City, West Kalimantan. The study successfully identified as many as 1465 Indonesian terms, 110 foreign language terms, and 95 regional language terms. Based on this study, it can be concluded that in economic activities, especially those related to basic needs, Pontianak city residents still have sufficient knowledge and awareness to use Indonesian, both outdoors and in public spaces. In addition, the study carried out also shows at least five roles for foreign languages ??and regional languages ??that cannot be replaced by an Indonesian equivalent.

Abstract

This study examines the types of alternative questions in Indonesian podcast discourse. Alternative questions consist of two or more propositions that offer a set of choices. Out of 718 questions identified across five podcasts, a total of 34 alternative questions were found. The data were drawn from podcasts available on the YouTube channels of Grace Tahir, dr. Richard Lee, Melaney Ricardo, Deddy Corbuzier, and Denny Sumargo. The theoretical framework employed in this study is based on Quirk et al.’s theory of alternative questions and John Searle’s theory of directive speech acts. The findings reveal three main types of alternative questions: (i) explicit–explicit alternative questions, (ii) explicit–implicit alternative questions, (iii) implicit–explicit alternative questions, and one additional category (iv) contextual implicit alternative orientation. The results indicate that explicit–explicit alternative questions are the most frequently occurring type.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the framing of mass media narratives regarding the alleged manipulation of the 2024 Election, revealed through the research data source, namely the documentary film Dirty Vote and the TV program Bocor Alus Politik titled “Hak Angket Kecurangan Pemilu VS Tawaran Kursi Menteri Prabowo-Gibran” and "Cerita Di Balik Pemilu Satu Putaran”. The research is drawn from the narrative quotes provided by sources in both media. The methodology used is Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis with a qualitative approach, along with Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis model. The analysis technique involves identifying framing categories, including problem identification, casual interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The results indicate that both media frame the 2024 Election as an event full of fraud and organized manipulation. The emerging narrative emphasizes the need for public awareness and decisive actions by law enforcement to maintain the integrity of democracy. Additionally, both media criticize political manipulation that undermines the democratic process and suggest that the audience should have a higher awareness when choosing leaders.
