Abstract

This paper discusses semantic movement as evidenced in Malay/Indonesian Islamic texts. The primary text in focus provides an example of ‘Abd al-Ra’ūf al-Singkīlī’s Malay commentary on the Quran, Tarjumān al-Mustafīd, produced around 1675. The study of the lexical data from this text is informed by comparative reference to three modern Indonesian texts of Sūrah Yūsuf: Mahmoed Joenoes’ rendering (1954), the official Indonesian government rendering drawn from Al-Quraan dan Terjemahnya (1974), and H.B. Jassin’s rendering (1978). The goal of this paper will be to answer two questions. First, the semantic range of certain lexical items used in the ‘Abd al-Ra’ūf Quran commentary compare with the norms of late 20th century literary Indonesian. Abstract

The study of Malay dialects was a specialist concern during the period of Dutch colonization of Indonesia and British colonization of the Malay peninsular. In recent times, the Malaysian National Language Council, the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, and its Indonesian counterpart, the Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa (PPPB), have devoted considerable resources to the study of Malay dialectology. Such dialect studies have necessarily had a geographical focus, by way of descriptive grammars of Malay dialects spoken in particular areas. Examples are the studies of Pontianak Malay (Kamal et. al' 1986) and Palembang Malay (Aliana et. al. 1987) published by the PPPB.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v9i1.672

Abstract

The field of tafsīr al-Qur’ān in Malay has attracted increasing scholarly attention in recent decades. The volume of commentaries has grown exponentially in the 20th century. Prior to that, Qur’anic exegesis in Malay was sporadic and varied. This paper will consider pioneering efforts by Malay commentators on the Qur’an, focusing on three key sets of materials. First, we will consider the earliest surviving fragments of tafsīr in Malay. Second, we will examine Tarjumān al-Mustafīd by ‘Abd al-Ra’ūf of Singkel, the first known commentary in Malay upon the whole  Qur’an, written in the late 17th century and subsequently widely disseminated throughout the Malay world. Third, we will focus upon the early 20th century commentary by Muḥammad Sa‘īd bin ‘Umar of Kedah, regarded by many as the second commentary in Malay upon the whole Qur’an.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v21i2.1072
