Abstract

This paper introduces the multisensory approach as a way of teaching that promotes engagement by involving the learners’ senses of sight, hearing, touch, and physical movement. This paper aims to describe the teachers’ role in applying multisensory approach in Primary English Home-based learning, find the benefits and challenges in applying multisensory approach, and provide strategies to overcome the challenges. This study uses qualitative descriptive as the research method and the data was taken from the researcher’s reflections, lesson plans, observation reports and mentor’s feedback. This study shows that multisensory approach positively promoted engagement in primary English home-based learning. Several classroom activities that can be used in applying multisensory approach are Total Physical Response, color codes, storytelling, art & craft, and interactive PowerPoint. The challenges occurred from technicalities and monitoring the students’ behavior. Therefore, parents’ involvement is highly required to monitor students’ behavior in home-based learning process. For the next researcher, it is suggested to find ways to maximize home-based learning by maintaining social interaction among students.

Abstract

Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0. is about dealing with digital-native students  and developing autonomous learning. One possible strategy to deal with these issues is using YouTube as a tool for English language learning. There have been some studies discussing the effectiveness of using it, yet we still have niches; for instance, deeper and wider contexts and respondents. Thus, this study aims to examine students’ autonomy over their learning and whether YouTube can develop the listening comprehension skills of nursing students in a Faculty of Nursing in Tangerang. To achieve the first aim, quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted, while for the second aim, an experimental study was used. The experimental study involved an experimental group consisting of 16 students and a control group consisting of 16 students. The result shows that the participants consider YouTube as a useful support to develop their autonomy in learning English and YouTube video has been successful to develop their listening skills.

Abstract

Indonesia has stipulated the implementation of the international program as one of its internationalisation's agendas. As a result, private and public universities strive to create international programs that would attract international students. This study focuses on an international program in a private university in Tangerang, which promotes English as a medium of instruction with little interference from native speakers. As many previous research have centred around study abroad in English speaking countries, this study offers a novelty of how identities are constructed in the context of English as a Lingua Franca where both local Indonesian and the international students are non-native speakers of English. Therefore, this research aims to discover how international students construct their language learning identity in English as a Lingua Franca context in Indonesia. There were eight participants from five different countries. They were interviewed using conversational narrative interview, and the data was analysed using narratives analysis. The findings were established in themes, and they indicated the positive identities constructions in many ways. These included reconstructing economic identity to religious identity, establishing Lingua Franca speakers identities, constructing global citizenship identities where all these constructions were supported by the acceptance and the zero pressure from the host. Therefore, it is concluded that zero power inequality promotes favourable language learning and identity construction during study abroad.

Abstract

Due to the importance of attention grabber in the classroom management for pre-service teachers, this study examines the implementation and impact of attention grabbers in young learners’ classroom. The scope of this study focuses on pre-service teachers of the English Department in one University in Jakarta from grade two to five, and to attention grabbers which are produced when students are noisy and moving around the class while the teacher is giving instruction or explanation. The data were gathered from observation and video recording. The results indicated that the pre-service teachers still need to be aware to use attention grabbers when the classroom situation is not conducive. In order to make attention grabber become more effective when the teachers use attention grabbers in the classroom, it is important to make sure all of the students are responding to the attention grabbers. Furthermore, the suggestion for the next study is to find more participants in different grades.

Abstract

The permeating use of English promotes a contact language among people from multicultural backgrounds called English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Pre-service English teachers going to the teaching practice thus need to be aware of ELF trends to engage with their students in the classroom. This study seeks to explore the ELF awareness of the pre-service English teachers in assessing the students' speaking assessment. Twenty pre-service teachers from three geographically different universities were recruited. They were asked to establish the speaking rubrics assessment based on the given video and were invited to Forum Group Discussion (FGD) for their underlying reasons for scoring. The results indicated that University A developed ELF awareness as they demonstrated open-mindedness, tolerance, less value on errors, and emphasis on intelligibility both personally and professionally. Meanwhile, Universities B and C openly state that Native speakers’ English is the only proper English, and any other use beyond it is a defect. The discussion suggests that the different geographical locations may cause different exposures to speakers of English. The study suggests that pre-service English teachers actively explore the ongoing trend in English Language Teaching with the Faculty of Education to provide continuous support in the process.

Abstract

Abstract

To provide quality and equitable education (SDG4), starting from one small area in Jakarta, a community service English Program was held by the Sunda Kelapa Sector Police, North Jakarta and UPH lecturers to teach English to elementary school children at the Orphanage in Muara Angke, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta. This program was assisted by tutors from students of the Faculty of Education, Pelita Harapan University, while the lecturers supervise the planning and teaching process. This activity aims to train children's communication skills using English. As an international language, English is chosen to be taught to children. Holistic and collaborative technological innovation is used to understand the social and cultural context. Storytelling, conversation, coloring, naming, pronunciation, roleplay, and gamification are used in the learning method. The results of the service show reading and writing skills, increased learning motivation, introduction to material that still needs to be improved, training tutors' teaching skills in guiding and knowing the material properly, and teaching equipment that needs to be improved. In addition, from the learning experience they had, they could learn and play at the same time, feel more confident, and be more active as they increase their sense of competition to achieve the learning goals.

Abstract

Taufiqul Mubarok, an orphanage in North Jakarta, is home to numerous orphans who attend school ranging from Kindergarten to Senior High School. These children, who are the primary residents of the orphanage, face significant educational challenges, particularly in English, due to limited access to quality education exacerbated by the high poverty levels in the area. In response, the Faculty of Education at Universitas Pelita Harapan (FIP UPH) and the Sunda Kelapa Sectoral Police (Polsek) initiated an English Learning Program to foster inclusive language education. The program aimed to provide these children with opportunities for educational advancement and, ultimately, a better quality of life than their parents. The English Learning Program, conducted from March to June 2024, adopted a holistic approach to support the comprehensive development of the orphanage residents. The program's methodology encompassed problem identification, preparation, implementation utilizing various teaching methods, appreciation, and evaluation. A competition was held at the program's conclusion to assess the participants' progress. The results demonstrated significant improvements in the children's English skills, highlighting the program's success.
