Abstract

Binus as an information technology-based campus, the campus electricity needs swell with the rising costs. Energy crisis threat needs to be observed in order to optimally support the operation of the building. To achieve energy savings on Binus Syahdan, an energy audit needs to be done with strategic measures related to saving HVAC systems, lighting and other utilities. Through observation, evaluation of energy utilization can be practiced to obtain recommendation and implementation of efficient energy management. From the results of energy audits and implementation of energy savings within five months, the saving reaches 33.5% on average each month. Thus Binus can save operating costs, have better work productivity and foster a culture of saving that can be continued for other Binus campuses. Sustainability of this activity is expected to bring Binus as energy-efficient campus pioneer in Indonesia, as a positive response to national energy saving programs.

Abstract

Window is one of building components that is directly related to lighting and ventilation. Currently a lot of vertical housings pay less attention to the design of energy-efficient windows. This study aims to find energy efficient windows that are applicable to vertical housing. Surveys on some vertical housings in Jakarta was conducted and environmental simulation programs using CFD and Ecotect was used to explore and analyze the performance of windows for natural lighting and ventilation and further developing of energy efficient windows. The result showed that the Jalousie windows mounted on the center of wall facing out and two louvers above the entrance and upperside of walls in the opposite side of rooms, combined with openings at the bottom of doors are able to create optimum cross ventilation. The resulted wind speed within the range of 0.15 to 0.12 m/s is enough to make comfortable air flow effect, and the average natural lighting of 200 lux is adequate forresidential activity.

Abstract

This research has explored the possibilities and concept of architectural space in a virtual environment. The virtual environment exists as a different concept, and challenges the constraints of the physical world. One of the possibilities in a virtual environment is that it is able to extend the spatial dimension higher than the physical three-dimension. To take the advantage of this possibility, this research has applied some geometrical four-dimensional (4D) methods to define virtual architectural space. The spatial characteristics of 4D space is established by analyzing the four-dimensional structure that can be comprehended by human participant for its spatial quality, and by developing a system to control the fourth axis of movement. Multiple three-dimensional spaces that fluidly change their volume have been defined as one of the possibilities of virtual architecturalspace concept in order to enrich our understanding of virtual spatial experience.

Abstract

House, yard and neighborhood where a person lives affect his life. As legacy of our ancestors, the use of ancient Chinese knowledge of layouting (feng shui) and ancient Javanese knowledge are an approach of eastern culture that needs to be preserved since they are the result of thousand-year wise and sage ancestral experiences. The combination of Chinese and Javanese knowlege help find natural phenomena in relation to the search for life happiness in harmonious balance. Planning the layout of a building needs the study of the characteristics of local condition and prospective residents. Fengshui as one aspect of the approach to natural alignment is used to deal with unbalanced natural or environmental clues around us, which can affect people's lives physically and psychologically. This study aims to identify the relationship between theories and practices as well as to find out to what extent the benefits of feng shui in the design of architecture. The survey results are analyzed by existing ordinances to get evidentiary between theories and practies. Fengshui and ancient Javanese knowledge are some heritages of ancestors’ thousands-year practice in the creating buildings which should be scientifically analyzed and integrated with the science of architecture so that the results obtained will be used in the development of architecture which is useful for occupants.

Abstract

Activities of office workers are most spent indoors. Unwittingly office buildings and enclosed spaces with air conditioning system usually do not have good ventilation and allow natural lighting. This condition may cause sick building syndrome (SBS). It is a collection health issues arising in relation to the time spent in a building and the air quality. A study was conducted through a literature review and field observations to obtain the impacts of SBS, as well as the prevention and solution of architectural aspects. From the results of the study, it was obtained that printer, computer, cigarette smoke, building materials, etc., gave rise to free radicals. Theair polluted by free radicals may cause medical problems such as headaches, eye irritation, quickly tired and weary body, runny nose, itchy throat, difficulty in concentrating, dry skin and dry cough. This research is expected to improve the quality of life of workers that can be started from the improved quality of health.

Abstract

This article explores algorithmic design methods in a design process that uses natural phenomena as the basis of its architectural morphology. It implements digital morphogenesis in reaction to ecology and the influential forces of the building environment. This paper is divided into two equally important sections: the process description and the project implementation. The description of the process demonstrates the methods used and the idea involved in incorporating nature’s influential elements as part of the creative task. Meanwhile, the project implementation showed practical case of the outcome of that process. Tools for visualizing and simulating nature’s environment are showed using algorithmic design method. The tools create transformations in NURBS-based surfaces through the translation of their respective control point matrices. The tools generate several different alternatives to be tested and analyzed.
