Abstract

Introduction: Resilience has an important role for psychological balance of male inmates as a population which is more vulnerable to a decline in mental health. This is a descriptive qualitative study with a literature review research design. Methods: This study was a literature review by examining ten literatures that had passed the screening process according to the specified inclusion criteria. Results: The results of this study found that there are two factors which affecting the resilience of male inmates, namely protective factor and risk factor. The protective factors are internal factors: social competence and good self-acceptance; and external factor named social support. The risk factors are internal factor in the form of psychological character: impulsivity and external factor from the family namely history of childhood trauma. The resilience of male inmates is affected by two factors consisting of protective factors and risk factors. The protective factors contribute to the high resilience level and the risk factors contributes to the low resilience level of male inmates).

Abstract

Introduction: As the development of the time, women committed criminal activities usually dominated by man. That crimes resulted negative stigma by society. So, it requires effective many discharge planning for female inmates to face the freedom. This study is useful for correctional nurses because of nurse basic role for provides female inmates discharge planning.Methods: The study about description female inmate’s discharge planning has already been studied in qualitative method, but it has not yet been studied in quantitative. The research purpose is to know the discharge planning of the return of the inmates in a female prison in Indonesia. This study was descriptive quantitative research method using with cross sectional approach. This research used questionnaire as the instrument. There were 25 samples that chosen by total sampling technique on a women’s prison in Indonesia. The analysis data using univariate analysis.Results: 92% of respondents would plan follow up skills from prisons, 68% of respondents would do legal plan, 100% of respondents would do the plan to maintain physical condition, 70.3% of respondents would do social interaction plan, 98% of respondents would do the mental spiritual plan, 65% of respondents would do the plan to meet the needs of residence and economy. Conclusion: There were various planning of female inmates before release from a prison. Correctional nurses are recommended to give more attention to the psychosocial problems of the women inmates and able to develop discharge planning program for the woman inmates by their freedom so that the inmates are ready to return to the society.

Abstract

Introduction: Stressors of prison life can cause women prisoners to become depressed. The differences in symptoms of depression among women prisoners and the general population may occur due to the characteristics of prisoners and the nature of the prison environment. Symptoms of depression among women prisoners are important to know to prevent the negative effects of depression. This study aimed to describe the symptoms of depression among women prisoners.Methods: A quantitative descriptive study involving 66 women prisoners was designed. Sampling technique using purposive sampling. Self-report surveys using Beck Depression Inventory II were conducted to collect data related to showed the symptoms of depression. Univariate analysis was used to describe the symptoms of depression in frequency distribution and percentage.Results: Symptoms of depression can be divided into three domains include cognitive, affective and somatic. This study showed that the symptoms of depression most commonly experienced by women prisoners are sadness (97%), agitation (85%) and sleep disorders (70%).Suggestion: The findings suggest that early symptoms of depression identification can help professional to minimize the negative effects of depression. Further research is needed to overcome depression among women prisoners.

Abstract

Introduction: Female inmates who newly admitted into prison has high stress level because   she need to adapt with the environmental conditions, individuals, and rules that applicated in prison. In Indonesia there are no research about female inmates adjusment. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of female inmates adjustment in a female prison in Indonesia based the domains in the PAQ questionnaire and comparing the situation with outside of the prison.Methods: This was a quantitative research with descriptive survey and cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used n this research was total sampling with 46 respondents with criteria newly admitted into prison for 1-3 months. The sample criteria are able to write and read and willing to participate in the study. The data were collected using PAQ questionnaire. Results: The results of this study show that dominant domain that worse in prisons compare with outside prisons was comfort and sleep problems. The most dominant problem that female inmates needs is sports, privacy, and sleep. The majority of female inmates have good friends while in prison, never feel prison as home, and all female inmate understand the rules in prison. Conclusion: Nurses should provide nursing care to improve female inmates’ self-adjustment in order to prevent mental health problems.
