Abstract

Fishing is one of the livelihoods in Java which causes the emergence of different fishing gears from one place to another. By applying a historical perspective, this paper identifies variety of fishing gears for fishermen in Jepara and Pekalongan which can be traced to their historical roots since prehistoric times. Two important questions raised in this article, among others, related to the history of fishing gear for fishermen in Java and why this fishing gear is still sustainable up to the present day. This research was conducted in several stages. First, it begins by searching for various fishing gears based on literature studies. Second, field research which conducted in Jepara and Pekalongan to determine the continuity of culture related to the findings of fishermen's fishing gear. The results showed that fishing is a job that has been done by humans for a long time. The variety of fishing gear used are adjusted to the natural conditions where the fish are located. The diversity of fishing gear shows that fishing activity can be used either as a side job or a main job. Even though it has passed a dozen centuries, it turns out that some traditional fishing gear are still used until today, indeed with modifications and innovations.

Abstract

As a multicultural nation, Indonesia holds an extensive and diverse cultural heritage, among which kebaya and jarik stand as profound representations of Indonesian women’s identity. Both have been officially recognized by UNESCO as elements of intangible cultural heritage. This study explores the preservation strategies of kebaya and jarik in Semarang City implemented by the Diajeng Semarang Community amidst the ongoing dynamics of modernization. Utilizing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, this research involved ten informants selected through purposive sampling, including community members and relevant stakeholders. The findings indicate that the Diajeng Semarang Community plays a pivotal role in sustaining the existence of kebaya and jarik through a range of creative initiatives such as social media campaigns, educational workshops, and collaborations with local designers, educational institutions, and government agencies. The study further demonstrates that the Diajeng Semarang Community has effectively positioned kebaya and jarik as cultural symbols that remain relevant within contemporary society. These findings underscore the dual function of cultural communities, not only as preservers of tradition but also as agents of social and cultural transformation. Consequently, the Diajeng Semarang Community serves as a concrete model of sustainable cultural preservation that bridges traditional values and modern practices.

Abstract

This article examines the development of the batik industry in Gemawang Village, Jambu District, Semarang Regency, from 2008 to 2021. The study focuses on two key entrepreneurs, Abdul Kholiq Fauzi of CV Batik Gemawang and Saiful Nurudin of Tinctori, who played an important role in revitalising the local batik sector. Their creative work introduced motifs inspired by coffee plants, regional folklore, and Indonesia’s seasonal cycle, particularly the rainy and dry seasons. Using a historical method consisting of heuristic data collection, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research shows that the industry’s growth was influenced by individual initiative, consistency, design innovation, and adaptable marketing strategies. The batik industry contributed to the local economy by creating employment opportunities and fostering community participation. It also supported the development of local tourism through educational visits that showcased traditional batik techniques. Although production and marketing declined during the Covid-19 pandemic, industry actors adapted through online sales and product diversification, allowing gradual recovery. Overall, Gemawang batik industry not only preserves cultural heritage but also strengthens the village’s creative economy.
