Abstract

This paper aims at describing Javanese reduplication system with focus of attention on forms, functions, and grammatical meanings. By using data extracted from Javanese text books and  ones of my own creation  whose grammaticalty and acceptability are previously tested with several native speakers,  through distributional method with its various technical analysis,  the research found that Javanese reduplication can be classified  into at least four linguistic forms. Those are full reduplication, partial reduplication, sound modification reduplication, and  affix-combined reduplication. Javanese reduplication can either perform inflective or derivative function in relation to its potentiality to maintain and change the word identity. Finally, with regard to the grammatical meanings, Javanese  reduplication at least can express eleven grammatical meanings, i.e. plurality, diversity, continuity,  intensity, attenuation,  reciprocity,  artificiality, collectivity, rate, astonishment and contrast. Many of these grammatical meanings are context sensitive.

Abstract

This paper deals with a Javanese traditional formula widely known as “jarwa dhosok”. By this formula and motivated by various intentions, Javanese people used to conform wittily the literal meaning of Javanese words with the creative meaning resulted from extension or modification of their consisting syllables. By using a number of data collected from website and added with ones I had found during my 40 year stay in Yogyakarta, I focuse my attention on the approaches of creation, semantic domains, and communicative functions by structural, contextual, and interpretative methods. Mostly “jarwa dhosoks” are created by treating the words to be defined as acronyms with final syllabic rhyming pattern, some of them are done with initial and combination of initial and final syllables. Jarwa dhasa created by various kinds of sound changes are much fewer in number. The practises of creating “jarwa dhosok” are used to fulfill various kinds of pragmatic function, mainly emotive, connative, poetic, jocular, and metalinguistic function, etc. Even though most of words to be defined in  “jarwa dhosoks” are created to be semantically conformed with the intentions, many of them might be  difficult to comprehend by outsiders or unfully pledged speakers  without comprehensive understanding of the Javanese cultural practices in its broadest sense.

Abstract

This article intends to investigate and applying conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson concerning sexual activities in Indonesian. All data presented in this paper are mostly collected from You Tube pornographic cinema narration comments. First all metaphorical expressions in the data collection are carefully observed. Further they are classified based on themes, and only ones related to sexual matters are chosen and brought into consideration, and the others are neglected. Through close examination toward those sexual metaphorical expressions, it is found that there are various possibilities of Indonesian speakers conceptually to perceive the sexual activities. The sexual activities can be conceived as “war and fighting”, “gardening and farming”, “food enjoying”, “paddling”, “Seal Breaking and Goal Piercing”, “Shell Cracking”, etc. These perception possibilities are inseparable from sociocultural factors and realities that exist within Indonesian speech community.

Abstract

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine after October 7 exacerbates, currently becoming the world’s most alarming issue. In the United States, which has an intimate relationship with Israel for providing arms and funds, American pro-Palestinian citizens march to the streets to chastise the government’s stance that bestows the wrong side. The endless action prompted Biden to consider the Palestinians entering the United States, which triggered the Republicans and Democrats to take sides, either to humiliate or support Biden’s manoeuvre. The political polarization related to Biden’s breakthrough became an enthralling topic delivered by politicians in their press releases, debates, or interviews. This study examines the contradictory ideological framing of the Republican and Democratic Senators toward the Palestinian immigration plan. The authors analyzed the interviews of Republican Senator Mitch McConnell and Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, taken from YouTube, using a CDA approach. The transcribed interviews were observed to unveil the stylistic, syntactic, and semantic elements aimed at uncovering these senators’ ideological biases. The study, which focuses merely on van Dijk’s micro-textual structures, shows that McConnell rarely utilized stylistic and syntactic elements but heavily relied on actor description and evidentiality. In contrast, Sanders heavily applied dysphemism and example/illustration strategies.
