Abstract

Social media has been rapidly developing. It can be used in various fields, such as government, education, and traditional performing art. This study looks at how social media is utilized to support ketoprak a traditional play that is still living in the society. The data were collected from library research and from interviews with resource persons who know about the past history of ketoprak. The analysis was based on the concept of tradition by Shil and collective conscience by Durkheim.

Abstract

Referring to the social conditions seen via social media today, this study has two research questions: 1) Are control and supervision needed for school age children using mobile phones?; and 2) Who are the right persons who would control them and provide the supervision? Using Malinowsky's functional approach, this research draw the data from observation and interviews from two schools in Yogyakarta. The results of the study indicate that school age children should be controlled in using mobile phones and this would be the responsibility of parents, elder member in the family, and teachers.

Abstract

Eating, sleeping, and defecating (kandhorak) are a condition that the people of Gedongtengen district is trying to avoid. Sosrowijayan, Gandekan, Jlagran, and Badran are kampoongs located in Gedongtengen area. These kampoongs are stigmatized as “black areas” where fights, gambling, drinking liquor, and prostitution are there. A jaker which means security personnel is a favorite job for men. This profession is social capital for them. Using the perspective of Castill and Bordeu’s theory of habitus, this research looked at the phenomenon of jakers. The data were drawn from library research, in-depth observations, and interviews.The result of the research shows that people who are given a negative stigma could in turn make it to become a social capital for their economic activity.
