Abstract

It is estimated that Java has about 500 species of Pteridophytes. Nevertheless conservation status of the Pteridophytes in Java has not been provided yet. Therefore inventory on the Pteridophytes of Java and assessing their conservation status are need to be done. The objectives of this study are: (1) to provide the preliminary list of the rare species of Pteridophytes in Mt. Slamet, (2) determine the distribution and habitat of each species. The species was categorized as rare species if it was encountered in less then 10 sites and or the population was less then 20 plants. Random search with belt transect (20 m x 500 m with a sub set 20 m x 100 m) was set up to record the occurence ofspecies in one or more hektar. Twelve species included in 10 genera are recorded as the rare species in Mt. Slamet namely: (1) Asplenium paradoxum Blume, (2) Christensenia aesculifolia (Blume) Maxon, (2) Cyathea glabra (Blume) Copel., (4) Cyathea oinops Hask., (5) Huperzia phlegmaria (L.) Rothm., (6) Pityrogramma austroamericana Domin, (7) Psilotum complanatum Sw., (8) Pteris insignis Mett. Ex Kuhn, (9) Pteris wallichiana J. Agardh., (10) Pyrrosia asterosora (Baker) Hovenkamp, (11) Tectaria zollingeri (Kurz) Holttum, dan (12) Thylacopteris papillosa (Blume) J.Sm. Three species are reported as new records for Java, viz. Pteris insignis, P. wallichiana, and Pyrrosia asterosora. Every species has its own distribution range and habitat characteristics

Abstract

Praptosuwiryo TNg, Pribadi DO, Rugayah. 2015. Growth, development and morphology of gametophytes of golden chicken fern (Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm.) in natural media. Biodiversitas 16: 303-310. The golden chicken fern, Cibotium barometz (L.) J.Sm., is an important export commodity for both traditional and modern medicine. To understand the reproductive biology of thisspecies, spore germination, gametophyte development, morphological variation, and sex expression were studied by sowing spores onsterilized natural media consisting of the minced roots of Cyathea contaminans and charcoaled rice husks (1: 1) mix. Spores ofC. barometz are trilete, tri-radially symmetrical, non chlorophyllous, and golden-yellow with a perine. Six stages of gametophytedevelopment (rhizoid stage, rhizoid/protochorm stage, filament stage, spatulate stage, young heart stage, mature heart stage) wereobserved between 24-45 days after sowing. Spore germination of C. barometz is Vittaria-type. Prothallial development of C. barometz isDrynaria-type. Five morphological types of adult gametophyte were recorded: (i) irregular spatulate shape (male), (ii) fan shape (male),(iii) elongated heart-shape (male), (iv) short heart or butterfly shape (female), and (v) normal heart shape (bisexual). The presence ofmorphological variations is presumed to be related to the population density, which significantly affects the sexual expression ofgametophytes. The variation of sex expression in C. barometz also indicates that this species may has a mixed mating systems thatresulted in genetic diversity within population and among populations.

Praptosuwiryo TNg, Pribadi DO, Puspitaningtyas DM, Hartini S (2011) Inventorying the tree fern Genus Cibotium of Sumatra: Ecology, population size and distribution in North Sumatra. Biodiversitas 12: 204-211. Cibotium is one tree fern belongs to the family Cibotiaceae which is easily differentiated from the other genus by the long slender golden yellowish-brown smooth hairs covered its rhizome and basal stipe with marginal sori at the ends of veins protected by two indusia forming a small cup round the receptacle of the sorus. It has been recognized as material for both traditional and modern medicines in China, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia. Population of Cibotium species in several countries has decreased rapidly because of over exploitation and there is no artificial cultivation until now. The aims of this study were: (i) To re-inventory the species of Cibotiun in North Sumatra, (ii) to record the ecology and distribution of each species, and (iii) to assess the population size of each species. Field study was carried out by using random search with belt transect. Two species were recorded, namely C. arachnoideum dan C. barometz. The geographical distribution of the two species in North Sumatra is presented. Cibotium is commonly growing terrestrially on opened or rather opened areas in secondary forest and primary forest at hills or lower mountains with a relatively high humidity at 30-90º slopes. C. arachnoideum has a strict distribution and only found at 1740-1770 m a.s.l. in primary forest, whereas C. barometz has a broad distribution in secondary forest at elevation range from 650-1200 m.
