Abstract

This research was done to evaluate the physical characteristic and chemical quality of the complete ration in pellet form that contain shrimp by-product.  The evaluation was done on several variables namely: moisture content, water activity, particle size, average collision endurance, friction endurance and angle of repose. Data obtained was analyzed based on Completely randomized design. The treatment was: R0 (complete ration without shrimps by-product), R1 (complete ration with 10% shrimps by-product), R2 (complete ration with 20% shrimps by-product) and R3 (complete ration with 30% shrimps by-product). The results showed that physical characteristic of the complete ration pellet that contain 20% shrimps by-product had the lowest moisture (13.07%) and the water activity (0.45). Based on the research, it is concluded that the best level of shrimp by-product in the complete ration was 20%. Key words:  By-Product, Pellet, Digestibility, Sheep

Abstract

The shell of the cashew nut industry waste has the potential to produce a product that is biofat bioindustry, biochar and biosmoke. The research aims to produce three products bioindustry, observe the physical and chemical characteristics. Eggshell processed into a particle size of 1 cm and 2 mm size, extracted with hexane and extraction evaporated to obtain Biofat. The residue biofat charred shell after the extract to produce Biochar and Biosmoke. Proximate analysis performed on fresh shells, biofat, biochar and biosmoke. The result biofat yield increased three-fold when the size of the shell is reduced to 2 mm (17.81 g/100g BK), while biochar and biosmoke increased two-fold when the size of the shell is enlarged 1 cm (30.82 g/100g BK and 5:13 g/100g BK). Biofat containing coarse fat and high total phenol (94.43 g/100g biofat, 46 mg/100g biofat) and total phenol containing biosmoke quite high (7.2 mg/100g biosmoke) on a large particle size. The results of GC-MS analysis showed biofat and biosmoke acidic anacardic high (74%) and biochar contains minerals especially high ash content (6:56%), Ca (0.69%), and P (12:23%) 2-fold increase in the particle size of the shell smaller than the large. Mineral Fe (695 mg/kg) more contained shells of large particles, whereas the characteristic biosmoke have a high acid content (pH 3). Cashew nut shell bioindustry products have specific physical and chemical characteristics to be used in various fields including livestock, agriculture or food.

Abstract

The use of bioactive compounds from plants is becoming a major interest to be used as feed additives to reduce the effect of greenhouse gases on climate changes and as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoter. One of the compounds that have not been widely known and used is anacardic acid. In Indonesia, anacardic acid and its derivates are commonly found in the waste from the cashew nut industry, namely cashew nut shells. The purpose of this paper is to describe the chemical and biological characteristics of anacardic acid and its effects on rumen fermentation and ruminant production. Anacardic acid or cashew nut shell extract that contains anacardic acid have the ability to suppress methane produced in the rumen. In addition, this compound increases propionic acid in the rumen which is useful for ruminant. Up till now, the applications of anacardic acid for ruminants that described in published papers were mostly done in vitro, while its direct application to livestock has not been widely reported and most of its use is combined with other compounds. The utilization of anacardic acid in Indonesia as a feed additive for ruminants will contribute to reducing greenhouse gases and increasing the productivity of ruminants.
