Abstract

This study is trying to implement the Audio-Lingual Method in teaching Maritime English in Akademi Maritim Nusantara Cilacap. The researcher wants to find the acceptable techniques of Audio-Lingual Method and the improvement of the students after the treatment. The students were split into two groups which are experiment and control group. The data were taken from the test result of Pre-Test and Final Test of those groups. The data were analyzed by statistics. The researcher describes the data by employing the theory of Audio-Lingual Method by Brown (1994). The result shows that repetition is the most acceptable technique used to teach Maritime English. The students show a great improvement between the Pre-Test and Final Test.

Abstract

For almost 2 years, the educational system around the world has been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic that leads to the shutting down of educational institutions including universities to control the spreading of the virus. This phenomenon coerces the government and also educational institutions to adapt their learning and teaching process. Along with various policies to handle the situation, the online learning system is suggested by Indonesian government as one of the solutions to facilitate distance learning. One of the methods to conduct distance learning is by using Google Classroom. This is a descriptive qualitative research with the fourth semester Engineering students of Akademi Maritim Nusantara as the subject. The key purpose of this research is to determine the efficiency of Google Classroom in Maritime English subject. The data are analyzed with Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The efficiency of the platform is measured with the Ease of Access (PEU) and Perceived Usefulness (PU) towards Google Classroom Maritime English learning activity. The result of this study shows that most of the students are satisfied with Google Classroom that is applied in their class during COVID-19 pandemic in terms of the easiness of accessing their assignments, hence their efficiency as a learning tool can be considered appropriate.

Abstract

One of the tools that can help teachers and students in a classroom’s teaching and learning program is media. Visual and audio are two kinds of media that can be used as tools to facilitate activities in class, especially in language teaching and learning. One of the most common media to be used worldwide is YouTube. Not only that it is an entertaining media source, but also YouTube can play a great deal in aiding students’ learning process. The aims of this study are describing how YouTube videos can be used to enhance the students’ speaking skill, and describing the process of utilizing YouTube videos in language teaching-learning activity. The subject of this study is the students of the third semester in the Marine Engineering Program at Akademi Maritim Nusantara. The classroom action research design is used as the method to conduct this study. Data collections are obtained by speaking interview and assessment. The result of the study which was conducted in two cycles showed that, the average score of speaking indicators of the students increased from 60.8 to 66.3 in Cycle One. In Cycle Two, the improvement was progressing to 76.4 on the average score of speaking indicators. From those results, the study concluded that there was an improvement in the students’ speaking skill. The students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, context, and grammar can be seen as the improving aspects of the students’ speaking skill. In conclusion, the use of YouTube videos to improve students’ speaking skill is reviewed.
